Default Re: Windows 8 anyone ?

Windows 10 will be released on July 29 and so far no one has upgraded from 7,8,8.1. People are of course using the windows 10 preview for free.

I use windows 10 on a virtual machine and so far the start menu seems to combine the bad stuff from 8.1. in fact, the start menu of 8 and 8.1 is much to my liking. Clicking anything takes to the program and desktop and I find it easier than the old 7 start menu. I just put icons for frequently used programs on start screen and user files.

As to 10, the nag has started and the update KB3035583 is responsible for this. If you have installed it, you can uninstall it and be rid of the nag. Just keep in mind that Win 10 should be available to you (7,8,8.1) by end-July 2015.

So far, things are clear on inplace upgrade. However the situation could become clearer on fresh install of 10 for people who have key for 7, 8, 8.1. One would need an iso of course for that and that should also be available by end July 2015. One does not know as of now whether the 10 fresh install process would require a key and whether 7/8/8.1 key will work during install.

No, it will not. Hyper-V has replaced Virtual PC from Windows 8 onwards. Please try a trial of Windows 8.1 to experience it. You will need the 64-bit Pro edition, the base/Core edition doesn't have Hyper-V, neither does a 32-bit edition.

I am getting a logo in my taskbar, asking me to upgrade to Win10 . I have a Samsung Laptop running Win 7. Should i upgrade? Any casualties reported so far. Also, if the release date is July 29th, why am I getting the message?

It's just to "reserve" a copy. MS is probably using this to judge interest & schedule the deliveries (it's a lot of data they have to push @ 3GB a piece).

MS has had no problems pushing 3GB and thus does not really need to schedule the deliveries. If you have used office 2013, every month updates are close to 1.5-2GB plus windows updates (100-200 MB). MS botched up windows 8.1 store updates but that could not be explained by bandwidth problems. Even when 8 was upgraded to 8.1, there was a prior update KB2873189 in early-Sep 2013 which was a prerequisite for allowing store update to 8.1. One had to go to gpedit.msc to disable the daily nags to update from store. I think 8.1 was pushed out thru store after that (when it became generally available in mid-Oct 2013).

Store/online download/upgrade is fine for people who could not care less about format or reinstall. But for many, an ISO is the thing to have.

I would be interested in 10 (have a 7 and 8.1 licence thru MSDN) not because of start menu but because initial updates will be less. Windows 8.1 has gone thru 3 major updates with 2 major ISOs post RTM (Apr 2014 and Dec 2014).

I am not sure why Microsoft is trying to push it over the network? Many of us in India still use the 2GB FUP, and internet is not as fast or as available as in US or Europe. It would have been good if they could provide an option where a media is provided at a nominal cost. It could either be a DVD, Blu-ray or even a read-only usb stick. This not only helps in saving the data used over the internet, but also helps when we need to re-build the machine. In fact a backup media option was available for 8.1 for US users. Last time I downloaded the iso, I had to install a download manager since the connection would drop at some vague point, and the process had to restart allover again!!

You will be sure to be get the ISO for windows 10 from any file sharing site within hour sof its being uploaded on MSDN. Just check on reputation of uploader and check the SHA1 (hash check) after download to verify the integrity.

That is it.
