@zappo.
AMd first came with athlon, then the athlon 64bit which had a completely redesigned core
But it was the Socket 754. The newest beast is the dual core 64bit which is on 939 socket.

The Sempron was the new AMD and is based on socket 764.
Athlon in its old avatar has been discontinued. now you will get Sempron in 32 bit space and Athlon-64 in 64bit 764 socket and Athlon 64FX/Athlon 64 dual core in Socket 939.

The Sempron(764) core has sorted out its heating problems.

So first came the Athlon. Then the Athlon 64bit. Now athlon is associated with performance, so 32bits became sempron and 64bits(dual cores too) became athlons.

With regards to thermal efficiency, the maximum thermal loss of the 2.0 GHz Sempron (2800+) is 68.3 W, while the Celeron D is specified at 73 W and thus less efficient in terms of power/performance.

Guys just visited the HP showroom this evening and got the following prices for three notebooks

Compaq Presario V2374AP (Celeron) - 39,488/- (only DOS included)
Compaq Presario V2381TU ( Pentium M 725A) - 51,557/- (only DOS included)
Compaq Presario V2324AP (Centrino) - 54,849/- (XP Home included)

All the above with 1 year warranty. If I want an extra two years warranty its an extra 9000/- with taxes.

On the other hand im getting an IBM Thinkpad (Model R51 I think) for 52,000/- inclusive of 3 years warranty

Comments?

What about these models?
http://h50025.www5.hp.com/hpcom/in_e...75summary.html
They are 64bit!. Dont know about the prices. If they cost below 60K they are a bargain.

IBM thinkpad is a highly rated notebook, but the price in US(when launched) is around 1500$, I doubt its for 52K in india and for your non-performance needs its a good buy, infact the best at that price. The IBM india site lists it at 87000.

My thoughts exact tsk. I really find myself inching towards the IBM now . Its giving good features for the price. I found the 9k for the extra warranty a bit too much for the HP

My office just ordered Thinkpads ( 60 GB / 512MB / DVD ROM / P4 ) for 48K.
The price however could be due to bulk orders.

However . no matter what ppl say, there is nothign to beat a Thinkpad.

Thinkpads are like Skodas. Aren't too flashy, perform well, and last a really long time. Go for it, dippy.

Hi. I would also suggest a Thinkpad, its brilliant value for money.

Personally though, I have been using a compaq pressario (p4, 266) for over 2 years now and only recently did the hard disk die. That cost me around 3.5k to replace, luckily i keep weekly backups so no data was lost.

Other than the hard disk crashing, I have been very happy with the performance of my machine and for over 2 years it has travelled with me everwhere AND has taken a lot of really rough handling - from bumpy state buses to motorbike trips.

Btw you can buy a portable DVD writer for laptops (which does not need a power supply) for around 6k. Its really light and convenient. I have one and it's been performing well. I would not suggest heavy burning on a laptop since imho the CD/DVD writers die if you over burden them.

at 52K its a steal, no doubt! Go for it! And better than the showroom go to
http://www.lenovo.com/in/en/ and chose a model which is listed around 90-95K. I suspect it will be below 60K for ya since R51 is so cheap! Go the business notebooks section.

I checked the site tsk they do have quite a range. The 52k price which I told you is given to me a guy known very closely to my dad And I feel 52 k is pretty good considering i get a three year warranty with it unlike HP whos charging 9000k extra over the prices i mentioned in an earlier post

In that case you are actually getting a great deal! 52K for a R51 which retails at 87K. since you are getting close to 35-40% off you can look at the 99K mrp laptops too.

I checked the Lenovo India site - the R51 is quoted at 48,000 including OS (XP Home)...so where is this 87k price coming from?

Lenovo Special Offers Page

EDIT: I found it - the price on the catalogue is still quoted at 87k, but its 48k on the Special Offers page...very confusing.
