Default Qosmio!

I'd choose from the Toshiba Qosmio series. They come preloaded with XP Media Center Edition, have great graphics and the regular bells & whistles.

Whoops, you ruled out the Qosmio while I was replying. Why not consider the Dell XPS lineup as well? Their features & performance is amazing, never mind that it is a Dell.

The XPS M140 seems like a good buy except that it doesn't have dedicated graphics.

From the Dell site:
Small and potent. At about 1.5" thin, 5.5 lbs1 light and with a Genuine Windows® XP Media Center Edition 2005 Operating System, the M140 is a true expression of multimedia power in a package that gets heads turning. True "instant on" functionality provides quick access to DVDs, video, music and photos and the 14.1" WXGA screen with optional TrueLifeTM helps make all this come alive.

And while I'm at it, I may as well mention the Acer Ferrari. It has the AMD Turion 64 bit CPU and not the Centrino though.

Here's the Top 5 Power Laptops according to PCWorld. An Acer tops the list! They are all pretty pricey though.

IBM, Acer, Hp, Dell, toshiba all are made in china and other southeast companies. SO quality wont be much different.

Yes IBM(Now Lenovo) certainly carries an amount of prestige for which you pay more.

Acer is a sensible buy still. otherwise Sahara computers also have a turion notebooks that are really cheap.

All I say is Turion is the cpu to have in a notebook at present. Forget dual cores as they are not too useful and not 64-bit until taylor comes.

And Sam, seriously ever thought of those Thinkpads? Dippy ended up buying it after a long debate.

Thsoe Quo* ones from Toshiba was wow, but pricey. I hate Dell as two of my friends had thso and we ahd to clean the fans as they got too dusty and teh lap began to shutdown coz of overheat.

Sam, I suggest you stay with Centrino Based lap with 2GHz Centrino pro with 2MB cache, 512MB (1GB suggested coz you use too many application at a time).

Why Centrino; coz laps with centrino are lighter and battery lasts longer.

Check out Thinkpad T43 series. A config I like tahts priced at 1.25k here in India. (2GHz, 512MB DDR (533Mhz!), 80GB HDD, CD/DVD Multiburner,64MB dedicated ATI radeon X300! , 14.1 SXGA+ TFT monitor, 3yr warranty. Costly??? Comeon, its my dream machine!
