Hi aza,

> I have 2 Acer with me on is 4710 and the other one is 4720 and my official

My office has 3 acers, a 4310 11 months old, another 4310 5 months old and a 5315 about 4 months old.

Noe of them have heating problems and are on for at least 11 hours or more everyday.

They were specifically bought to replace the other low end (Sahara) which had heating problems especially with our DOS application.

Guys, Dell launches the Studio series. I think it is inbetween the Inspiron and XPS series. Looks good.

Hi Vinay,

> Hey Bro, try flashing the BIOS it should fix the issue.

The Sahara has been sold. But I do have an LG which also does the heating trick. The common feature between the Sahara and the LG are that they are 14 inch square screens. None of the wide sceen 14 / 15 laptops have heating problems.

Any pointers as to how go about the BIOS flashing part?

Thanks in advance!

You should either get a executable file which can be run within Windows. Once you run the file it will restart and flash the BIOS upon restarting. Or certain versions require you to create a bootable flash disk, either using a floppy or some can be on a CD too. Depends on the manufacturer and the version. Almost all latest versions of BIOS come with executable files. They can be run from within Windows and it will flash the BIOS during restart.

Keep us posted when you buy one and pictures will be good too. Ask them for a demo and see if you can go online and see how it performs on multiple applications and multiple websites at the same time. Should give you a better idea about its performance atleast a fair idea about how it would fair when you use it on daily basis.

Generally over heating is caused due to the air vents getting blocked by dust. Also it depends on where you use the notebook on. If you are using on the table then it should not get heated up, but when you use in on your lap top there are more chances of notebook getting heated up.

Flashing BIOS is done by downloading the BIOS from the computer manufacturers support site and installing it, by doing this most of the time over heating issue is fixed.

If your computer has some high end graphic card and if you are using some advanced programs, there are possibilities of overheating. Also some when you connect the AC adapter to the notebook when you are working and if it’s kept on the lap then you can feel more heat.

Swiftron.. can add some points if I have missed any.

I guess you have summed it all up vinay. There was an instance when a guy found that his laptop was heating up a lot and when an onsite tech went over to inspect he found a lot of dog hair clogging the heatsink and fan assembly. Cleaning up the air vents regularly should help, but be aware not to use vaccum cleaners since they induce static on the computer. Its better to use a can of compressed air.

My 4 year old Compaq laptop heats up a lot. It does not matter whether I keep it on the table or on my lap. In fact the fan makes a lot of whirring sound on continuous running or if I open multiple applications at one time. The RAM is 512 MB but the laptop seems a lot slower. What could be the reason for overheating?

Should I increase the RAM or get the fan checked/cleaned?

Is the laptop under warranty? If so then i would definitely tell them to replace the heatsink and the fan assembly. If it is not under warranty take it a local tech shop whom you know can handle the system well and ask him to clean up the insides for you, that should take care of it. You can use a laptop cooler. There are 3rd party applications which lets you take control of the system fan and you can have the fan run oh higher speeds to keep the system cool.

I would suggest a RAM upgrade, atleast 1GB is a must with the kind of applications that we use these days. More over it wouldnt cost much either. And RAM would not cause any sort of heat related issues.

Final price: 70,242.25 INR

Expected time of delivery - 10 days.

Seems like the Dell Employee purchase scheme has been stopped since day before yesterday.

Had initially thought of the T5250 processor (2GHz with 2MB memory & 667Mhz FSB) but then a in-house geek told me that is the old model and take atleast the T7000 (800MHz FSB) series. The best would have been the T9000 series, but $$$!!!

But then I guess the 4GB RAM and the 7200rpm hard disk should help me with the performance.

You will need a good GPU, atleast a 256MB (DDR3) nVIDIA 8600m GT that comes on a Dell XPS 1530

Also get a higher resolution screen (1680 x 1050) and a faster hard drive (200GB 7200RPM or 320GB 5400RPM)
