I find Google maps much better that Nokia maps. Google maps have been a side discussion in the Satnav v MapMyIndia thread. My son was in Bangalore for a fortnight and used Google Maps extensively for local driving. He also reported that you could download the local area and the use the GPS to navigate. Do not need to have the web link on all the time. He is using htc Hero on CDMA.

One thing Nokia takes a long time to get a GPS fix, while htc is fast and as expected my Garmin Nuvi even faster.
Now that is interesting. Can you please guide as to how?

LeadF00t,

You need to had MGmaps installed; this is the application that gives you the UI and interfaces between the map tiles and the GPS data.

You need GPSPortPPC so that it can transmit the GPS data from your hardware to MGMaps at the required port.

You need GMapMaker to download the required tiles from Google maps. Word of caution: the tile size and your device disk allocation size might play foul. You might end up losing tons of space if not planned out well.

Do not that you will not get routing.

Happy mapping!

How did you do it and how do you use it with MGMaps? Does it not foul with the online maps supplied by google.

Are you running mgmaps totally offline?

What is the size of the download?

Till what level did you go?

Default Merge two mgmaps?

I have downloaded two maps from mgmaps. One at a lower zoom level for whole of the country and one at a higher zoom for Pune.

Now how do I merge these?

And where do I copy these on the phone so that these begin to be available to me offline?

I use Nokia E71 and BSNL.

Anyone? Please.

Mod, earlier I entered this post in another thread by mistake. Am correcting it now.

Wow, google map's voice assisted turn by turn navigation is now officially made available for Android phones (works on as old as 2.2 version)! Hurrah.

Yes, the news link is http://gadgets.ndtv.com/apps/news/go...c-cards-263355.

Even without traffic cards, it does give traffic status in the GPS and location is enabled on the android phone. I tried it yesterday, and it actually showed me heavy, medium, low traffic areas for a specific destination. I haven't driven to the destination to know the sanctity of information, though. :-)

Nokia phones have their own version of maps via OVI and always provided directions, however not sure if they were turn-by-turn and voice assisted on Symbian. Nokia's windows phones do have marvelous navigation facility.

As far as I know, the latest google offer is for Android phones only.

Hi,

I tried out Google's voice navigation for the first time today and it worked great. It just took a little time to reroute whenever I changed from the plotted one. Voice works pretty well too.

This is one (more) area where the Note excels. The huge screen means that visibility is excellent, even at the default zoom level.

However, it is a battery killer on my Note, and I need help with one thing:

Is it possible to enable something like Night Mode on navigation and map? This will help to save power as the OLED screen can use less power when it displays a darker color.

Yes I do agree with you, that Nokia has its own version of Maps via OVI, but it is not at all accurate, I ended up landing at the wrong place due to the same. It shows me a way where there is none.

I tried the google maps on my friends phone and it works like a breeze, very accurate. I used the same while going from Bangalore to Kodiakanal and back, it was just awesome.

Can anyone help me getting a compatible version of google maps with the Nokia X6?

Worked great. There is a "screen dimming" option in navigation. The screen dims between instructions to conserve power.
