40gb - no memory/sd card slots, only 2 usb ports instead of 4
60gb - memory/sd card slots, 4 usb ports - older chipset which supports ps2 games in hardware but this unit heats up a lot due to chipset issues
80gb - memory/sd card slots, 4 usb ports - newer chipset which does not support ps2 games in hardware (so software emulation) this unit has no heating issues due to better IC design

also 60 gb is discontinued most places and is old stock
only if you need ps2 games compatibility go for it - else get a 40gb

I have a 60GB, so what is the best way of preventing it from heating up? I rem Nitroxx getting some sort of a ventilation system for his PS3, how much does that cost?

Found this cost effective way of cooling your PS3 using USB fan system.

Slightly incorrect with regards to the 60GB model. Depends on if it is a NTSC or PAL as to whether there is H/W or S/W support from ps2 games.

Table below from wikipedia explains things.

bigman even your comparison is a bit wrong. the 80gb is no longer in production and there are talks of a 120gb version.

Cool

ya i hear that a 120gb is planned soon too - but seriously if harddisk is the only thing, I am sure most of us can get a cheap 40gb and upgrade it ourselves to 320gb or so without voiding warranty. Also I prefer connecting an external 500gb-1tb hard disk for mass storage

i never knew about the 20 GB one. Well 4 ports are not a problem unless 4 people have to play simultaneously ? One can use USB hub. Neither do one need SD card etc as one can connect Card reader.

The biggest problem being PS2 compatibility.

Hows the online play on PS3 compared to XBOX 360 as i have played on XBOX360 and found the online play pretty good.

The controllers are wireless and you only use the ports to recharge them. So you could still have 4 players on a 20GB ps3.

I like the ps3 online play and best thing is that its 100% free.

Remember even on the fully compatible models, only original ps2 games work. In addition to that they have to belong to the same region.
Most ps2 games in India are fakes.

One advantage of the 80gb version is the free game bundled with it which kind of makes up for the higher price. Ps3 games are around $60 and the difference between the 40 and 80gb versions is $100. So all in all you are paying $40 extra for the USBs, extra HDD space and BC
