Is Avast free edition really as efficient as AVG ? I had used it earlier and it was not that heavy on system, but if somebody had used both AVG and Avast, I would like to know which one is more efficient.

I am on the verge of formatting my PC, so any help will be useful.

I tried Avast for 2-3 months, and it worked just fine. I switched to Kaspersky, and I find that my system has slowed down a lot.

Nitin, which version of Kaspersky are you on? My personal experience with the 2008 trial version, and 2007 version has been just wonderful!

I have used both, but currently on Avast on my primary PC for a number of years. Searched for a comparison and got this two year old blog, maybe will give you some idea which one to go for. Look at the comments towards the end, as such the blog is an old one.

Thumbs up Eset

Opt for ESET

ESET Smart Security 4

ESET Smart Security adds a firewall and antispam technology to ESET NOD32 Antivirus, protecting your family from Internet threats while blocking annoying junk email. ESET Smart Security 4 sports an easier to use firewall and delivers smarter antispam for Outlook, Outlook Express, Thunderbird and other popular mail clients.

ESET NOD32 Antivirus 4

The fastest, most effective technology available to protect you from viruses and spyware without slowing you down while you work or play. ESET NOD32 Antivirus 4 ThreatSense scanner is even smarter and faster, while adding removable media security, new diagnostic and recovery tools, and more advanced heuristics.

Tried all other Antivirus software in the past and ESET given me the satisfaction from the last 6-7 years.

The other thing you can go for is Avira , But choose the Antivirus only . Not the Avira Premium Security Suite
The Good point is, The basic version of Avira is totally free

I used Norton Antivirus on Lenovo 200p22q lappy till last year. Then I got Asus Eeepc 1000HE which came with ESET, I removed ESET and installed Norton again. One day the nettop got strung by a severe rootkit and trojan keylogger, eventually my bro got me Guardian Antivirus which is simply the best. No problems as of now. We use a total of 10+ hours of online time and 500mb data per day. Guardian is Pune based very upto date reservoir of virus definitions.

Benny, I guess I got the 2009 version. I'll have to get back home and check the other details, like a version number.

I've been using AVG free till now.
Presently switched over to K7 - my dad bought a 3 license CD and so I used the extra licenses. It seems quite good.

I've been using Avira for quite a while now and I recommend it to all my friends and relatives who ask me for an AV. Its free, pretty effective with viruses, malware and adware and mainly, very light on system resources. Recently a friend's trial version of McAfee expired and she installed Avira after I suggested it to her. A full system scan revealed 3 - 4 trojans on her system which McAfee did not detect. Wonder why.

I installed Kaspersky 2009 on my system, upgrading from 2007. I dont really feel much of a difference in the performance, although i think the system boots slightly faster. It could even be more of a feeling, though.

As KB had mentioned, maybe i could have tried 2010, but the pessimist in me prefers a stable product over a newer product. Hence, settled for 2009.

I use Norton. Just bought a one year subscription. After reading this thread, I realise there are better (cheaper) solutions available.

Mithun, why dont you try and procure the 2008 or 2007 version which may be old stock at some shops? They would be willing to sell the old version at cheaper prices. The best part is that it is genuine, and also works as good as the newer releases. For eg: I was on the 2007 version (3 licences) till recently, and had bought it for Rs.550/- from a computer shop.

Check it out.
