I am a Norton 360 user for past 3 years. Needless to say I will extend the license. I have not had a single infection prevented or threat go undetected on all 3 PCs.

I have used AVG and Zonealarm suites and both were pretty good too back in those days (before 2007).

Eset Smart Security V.5 , total peace of mind .

Have been using Eset Nod-32 for the past 4 years and what an amazing peace of software it is. Never slows down the system and detects and removes all those viruses

Both Kaspersky and Norton are good. I was using Kaspersky until a couple of years back and had no viruses. Once I had to reinstall Windows. I had a problem while reinstalling Kaspersky. It would not accept the license key, saying it had already been used! Then I shifted to Norton. Norton is also good. I haven't faced any virus problem with Norton, too.

I also have linux partitions on my desktop as well as laptop. No need for anti-viruses there!

malware also exists on *nix (incl Linux) platforms. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux_malware . As per one of the article, there are 3000+ signatures malware targetting Unix systems. Many vendors have product to protect such systems.

Similar was the earlier thinking for Mac OS; but the recent one Flashfake affected 700K machines worldwide. Also, http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4651

Myself using Quick Heal Antivirus suite for last two years. Efficient detection/prevention as well as cleanup + easy on system resources. Highly recommend,

Renewed the Kaspersky Internet Security license, got an offer of 3 licenses for Rs1195/-.
Have been using it for 3 years now, I find it cheap, efficient and low on system resources.

Visited KSEB Officers Association site ( Kerala State Electricity Board ) and got infected by a rogue anti-virus software called "System Care Antivirus".

Had to do a registry edit in safe mode before trying to find a permanent cure cause nothing was accessible in normal mode. The rogue blocks all possible options to shut it down. Then downloaded malwarebytes and cleared up the hidden files - this too had to be done in safe mode.

Post that, i tried the below free options to see which would detect and block the attack

Original Kaspersky 2012 with latest updates failed.
Free AVG failed.
MSE failed
MSE with Defender failed.

Stopped further trials and not visiting KSEB site again, im fed up of the exercise .

Been using Kaspersky for last three years, renewing every year. All software should be as good and affordable; paid aprox Rs.1200 for three licenses.

I am using Kaspersky pure 2.0 on 3 of my PCs including one on windows 8. I have used McAfee, Norton and AVG before. IMO, Kaspersky pure is the best though slightly expensive. Works out for a 3 user pack though.

Default Symantec slowing down your corporate PC/Laptop?

Are you using PC / Laptop in office?
Is Symantec the Antivirus used in all PCs?
Is Symantec slowing down your computer too much while you try to work?
Wanna shut it down but can't? (Because of group policy and password required for shutting down Symantec)

Here's a simple solution:
  • Boot into safe mode (by pressing F8 and selecting "Safe mode")
  • Go to the folder C:\Program Files\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection\12.1.2015.2015.105\Bin
  • Rename the file sms.dll to something else, like sms.bak or something.
  • Restart computer.

No more Symantec slowing down your PC!

Note: Do this at your own risk, as the PC will be running without antivirus protection.

Prefer to do this on the day when group policy schedules a full scan thereby slowing the computer down like a snail.

I hate Symantec!

Thanks clever max.
Will the system administrator able to detect that we have manually override the antivirus? I don't want to be caught for violating company policies . BTW any way to bypass Juniper pulse?

I am not sure if it can be detected, but I've been using on a need basis for months and so far I am sailing smooth.

No idea about Juniper pulse. Finding out Symantec workaround was easy, just go to services and find out the Symantec service and look at its executable's path. It will be this dll.

Hope you are not connected to Internet or copying files over the local network, USB sticks. Else your PC is a sitting duck.

With right tools, they can.

That is something serious.

PS: If your PC/laptop is slow, request for upgrade of RAM or processor or the system itself.
