Are you planning to buy a SATA drive? According to many reviewers, it hasn't shown much gain on performance above the IDE ones. Yes, you can decrease the interconnecting cables clutter.
Do you want an internal writer or an external one?
Internal ones costs hardly 1200 Rs these days. You can buy a casing and make it external too.

Thanks Speedzak.

I am looking at an Internal drive. One of my friends suggested to look at a Lightscribe DVD writer. I was wondering if it makes sense. Also do you get them in India.

Secondly, DVD drives have different supported standards. Single Layer, Dual Layer...then there are compatibilities with different formats R,RW,RW+,RW- and so on....

Any feedback on the Sony DRU 840A?

Yes, you do. A friend picked up one a couple of months back but I don't remember the exact price. It wasn't much more expensive from a normal DVD-Writer though.

Sony also has now got LightScribe DVD-RWs. Earlier it was LiteOn and HP only. If you can get a LightScribe DVD-RW without paying much extra, no harm. More important to see that it can read/write DVD-RAM also amongst the other formats. Almost all can handle dual-layer DVDs now.
BTW, LightScribe is not terribly impressive, nor is it cheap (media cost too high), which is why it does not seem to have caught on much. And after focussing so much on the write speeds of your CD or DVD you suddenly realize that to LightScribe a 'full' disc in 'best' contrast the time required is at least 30 minutes! I've been using a LiteOn LS enabled writer for the last 2 years. Much better to buy a printer that can directly print to 'printable' media - the cost of such inkjet printers is down to as low as Rs.4100/-!

Actually the score is decided by lowest sub-score. In my case it is the processor which is holding me back at 5. The hard disk is at 5.7 points.

jesal, check which component of yours has the lowest score.

No complaints with the LiteOn. It's done everything I've asked of it. It is quite highly rated.
Sony also have LS enabled DVD-RWs now, Do check them out.

Printable media: These are the discs that look all-white on the 'top'; that is a coating of 'paper' to allow inkjet printing on to that surface.
Moser Baer prices are considerably higher for the printable media, compared to the normal (Moser Baer) media. For a spindle of 100 CDs: Normal Rs.750/- and printable Rs.1100/-; DVDs Normal Rs.950/-, Printable Rs.1900/-. This is, however, MUCH cheaper than LightScribe discs at Rs.100/- for ONE CD (I've only found Verbatim brand in the market here). LS DVDs simply not available here.

As for an inkjet printer that can directly print printable media, please make sure you do have such a printer - a normal inkjet printer cannot print to discs.
