Ah...now I get it. Buying the same from Dell will cost you 77k and assembling it yourselves will cost 95k.

Wow, since when did branded come cheaper than assembled ?

Wow, this is really VFM. You might get the same config for about 80k if assembled though.

Tried that and its possible if you use cheaper components. If you stick to the same ones which dell uses, its running up to around 95k. Plus the added benefit of a well put together system, extremely easy to setup OS image, warranty is in dell's favour.

Update on the system:
The HDD is a western digital & the graphic card says ATI and no mention of any third party card manfacturer. The card looks exactly like the reference card posted by ATI. Does ATI make cards directly? I thought ATI generally makes the chipsets and the card manufacturers like Asus, MSI, XFX etc build the retail cards.

@prateekm, Its featured on the Dell site. Its 49K and I have chosen the higher processor (1055T instead of 1035T which I think is OEM only).

Comes to Rs 53496 including delivery charges. Dell's customization allows you to spend more than the basic price they have, no downgrade. Not so flexible.

looking to upgrade my PC. Primarily office applications, some HD video, and almost no gaming (well, I will not mind a crack at NFS or GTA, however even if they are 2-4 year old versions and my PC can handle it, I am fine with that).

Right now I am using Athlon 64 3200+ with 1 GB of RAM. Everything is fine, however system dies trying to open and process the RAW images from my DSLR.

1) This post is supposed to be in " Help Computer Configuration " thread.
2) Please give more information about your budget. One thing I can suggest is the Phenom II X4 and X6 if you want to spend more. If not much, then go for Athlon II X4 or Phenom II X4. About mobo, stick to MSI/Gigabyte with AMD chipsets. Get a decent graphic card like HD4770 or 4670/9600Gt if on a lower budget.

Refer to this site : TechShop.in - Buy Tech Online Now!!! and try to figure out what suits you best.

Remember than DDR3 config will be a better bet in the long run. Check out power supply as well and then post your initial config here.

Thanks for the suggestion. By the time you posted this, I was already at my dealer finalizing things.

So here is my new rig :

AMD Athlon II X4 635
ASUS 785G MBD
Onboard ATI GPU and Sound
Corsair 2 X 2GB DD3
1TB Baracuda
Sony DVD Writer
Cooler Master Elite 310 Cabinet
Cooler Master 350 PSU

For this I paid around 23K

This works with my :

Acer H233H 23" LCD
Altec Lancing ATP3 Speakers
Logitech Standard Mouse and KB

Help Needed

I am planning to build a computer to replace my aging desktop ( circa 2004). I looked up many but still confused( but can't stretch the budget to more than 25k with monitors excluded):

An Intel i5 750 Processor based system will assure me of another 5 years of decent service before being lodged in a museum. The one I am using is a Pentium 4 running at 2.40 GHz.

I would be grateful if the Gurus point me in the right direction. I do practically everything with my desktop - graphics, coding and surfing. HD viewing and ripping is contemplated with the new machine.

Well, if you are graphics professional, I am sure you will need graphic card. So there is no point in spending on that Core i5 that will most probably have X4500 on the processor die.

I think that an AMD setup will do nice. You can get AMD quad core processors for around Rs. 5300 i.e. Athlon II X4 630/635. Mobo will cost around Rs. 4/5/6K ( there are a lot of options on this one ). PSU around Rs. 3K, RAM around Rs. 4K, graphic card around Rs. 6K ( may be 9800GT or GT220 ).
Cabinet and HDD combined will cost around Rs. 4-5K, again a lot of options. If you go for HD4770, IMO, no external power supply is required, so you use 400W PSU. I have added cost of PSU considering you are spending on getting a PSU from Corsair/coolermaster. Else even a Rs. 1500 cabinet from iball will have 400W PSU that will good enough if your graphic card does not require external power supply.

You can have a look at techshop.in and figure out yourself what is the best bet for you. Please do mention if you are looking for HDD replacement or not.

Processor : Athlon II X4 630/635 Rs. 5300/-
Mobo : Mobo from MSI/Gigabyte with 785 chipset Rs. 5700/5800/-
Graphic card : HD4770/GT220 Rs. 6000/- 9600GT will reduce the price to around Rs. 5000/-
cabinet+PSU : Iball netx or any large cabinet. Mostly it will have 400W PSU that will be good enough if you have HD4770/GT220/GT240. Rs. 1500/-
HDD : Seagate Barracuda 500GB 7200.12, Rs.3300/-
RAM : DDR3 1066, 2X2GB, around Rs. 5000/-
Optical drive : Rs 1100/-

Total approx. Rs. 28,000/-
Going a little low on graphic card will reduce a bit to your budget.

Thanks a lot aaggoswami for the reply. Thanks again for the quick reply too.

I don't play any game. Do I still need the Graphics card ? I am not a specialist graphic designer. I dabble with Photoshop. I use my laptop for Video editing. I have Sony Vegas software in that.

I am a bit inclined to go with Intel chips. How much will be the damage if I opt for Intel ?

Its not matter of damage, but if you are inclined on graphic card, then the Core i5's on die graphics processing becomes useless, but you still would have paid for it. For almost the similar cost, you can get a quad core AMD processor.

If you are not doing very heavy job on graphics, then you can go in for 9500GT ( if it is available ) or GT210 which will not need any external power. Then 400W PSU will be good enough. But I would still recommend that you spend on graphic card.

Quadcore Corei5 are not available with hyper threading and price is higher. For the cost of dual core Corei5, you can get quad core AMD processor.

AMD setup is more VFM IMO.
