Which Portable HDD ?

Hi,

I am in need of buying a good portable hdd. It should be atleast 40GB. Please suggest which one to go for. Should not be very costly. Iomega's are pretty costly so they are out of the list.

Another query which SATA HDD is good Seagate or Samsung ?

I got my Iomega 120GB for 5400/- in Delhi. But it was an imported, non-warranted piece. These are good especially they are built to be shock-resistant.

Another cheap option is to buy a 5.25" HDD casing & use a normal HDD inside it. This will cost you around 300-400rs plus the cost of the HDD.

WOW 120GB for Rs. 5400 . For how long have u been using that drive ? Nah i need it for laptop so i will carrying the drive here and there. That is why i am asking for portable.

And i already have 5.25" HDD casing for my home PC.

I too use it for my Laptop & do carry it around. And I've been using it for about a year now. There was one 20GB drive the dealer was showing me for around 3500/- which was USB powered & also did not have an external power supply. This drive also had a pretty small form factor.

I bought a Hitachi 80GB for 3500 bucks about a month back.

USB powered and for Laptop .. so really small form factor.

Western Digital is the best. Prices I'm not too sure of in India.

I second that, go for the WD Passport 120GB. I picked it up for Rs/-10,800 , a bit costly, but worth it

I suggest if any one else is looking to buy should get it from US or UK if they know anyone coming to India.

I just grabbed a 400 GB for £99 (INR 8,700) and its more cheaper in the US.

this sounds bit interesting. I have heard about it. I have a 4.2 GB old but good HDD. Its not of any use for obvious reasons. May I can make portable for transfering data.

Please elaborate a bit on this. Any specific brands who provide such case. Is it USB supported ?

Navdeep - Yes this is USB based & is basically an outer casing which houses your external HDD. It has a seperate power supply & can be used with any desktop HDD (Not SATA/SCSI though). There is a seperate version also available for Laptop HDD's. Yes, you can use your HDD as a portable drive.

It's pretty cheap & in Nehru Place is available for about 300-odd rupees. No specific brands since its mainly china made but mine says Jubilee on the cover.

I think alot of you are getting confused or maybe i am not getting it. What i need is a 2.5" portable hdd and not that big box types.

What is need is this type thing:

you can also get a smaller casing ...which is for the laptop size HDD..this one is a usb powered one ...so you dont have to worry about carrying too many wires....i think the one which i saw was a tech-com one.

Thats what I have done with my setup. Use a Samsung 80 gig HD in an unbranded enclosure. It serves me pretty well since the last 2 years. And recently saved my life when my Laptop HD crashed.
