Buying a Flat Panel Display (LCD/Plasma/LED etc)

I somehow found time today and ended up at croma and here are my views

Sony is a big fail. Backlight bleeding plus blacks are pathetic.

Samsung is a big winner. Looks better, the panel was HQ12, colours were amazing, blacks were downright brilliant, no backlight bleeding, motion was smoother, it had less grains overall, denoising was also good (The showroom guy had a LOTR DVDRip).

Plan for Sony EX520 dropped.

Purchased a LG 47 inch LED TV, however with voltage issues in our area thought of getting a stabilizer, any suggestions? Also, are there any stabilizer which has port for surge protection for DTH / LAN cables?

we got the BRAVIA KDL-40EX520 back in September last year, but could get our hands on the wifi dongle for it only this evening (it wasn't available till now). got home and started the setup and it was a breeze. once the TV was on my wifi home network, i could use the Sony Media Remote app for iPhone to control the BRAVIA. however, when i tried to use the keyboard function, i kept getting the below error:


the two suggested solutions (for some other models) i found Google didn't work either:
- power off TV and start again
- reboot the phone

anybody have had the same problem and got it fixed? if yes, please share.

I've seen the same (40EX420). but this error only appears when i'm trying to access the keyboard when an alpha-numeric input does not exist on the TV page. other places (like web pages) it works fine.

wifi dongle for Sony LCD? what is that? Never heard of that. Even i have a Sony LCD at home and would like to know more on this. Are these model specific wifi dongles?

Sony says that the dongles are common for all their TV's (all that have USB inputs) but you might have to check. I've also seen 3rd party manufacturers say that their dongles will work too, but never tried them out. Anyways, the USB just lets u connect the TV sans wires to the internet/router/media centre PC. this can also be achieved thru a wired connection and the media app works with the wired connection too since it talks to the TV's ip.

the USB wifi dongle (UWA-BR100) works with broad range of Sony LED/LCD TVs but only those which have Internet TV. check if your model supports such connectivity on the Sony site.

Thanks ! Since I'm still in 'research' mode, I thought I might as well do the full 9 yards and have a shortlist comprising at least 1 model from the big brands, was planning on looking at Sony EX520 series today, will be alert when I see it today.

Min view distance is 6 feet. I have 50St in my BR which is only 12 X 14.

As for wifi , IMO netgear 3100 works.

Anyone have an idea of wireless dongles for Samsung LED tvs. Would like to connect my "Smart" tv to the net without the cables. The one from Samsung directly i think costs around 2k. Can't one use a standard wi fi dongle?

Not been able to give the net a try till now on the tv, so the idiot box hasn't become any smarter.

My parents have decided to get a 40" or 42" plasma/led tv. The TV is usually on for ~12-14 hours everyday so please advise if Plasma at this kind of usage makes sense?

It must be a Full HD TV with basic features such as USB connectivity etc.

Plasma's has 1 lakh hours life. So at the above rate it will last at least 15 years.
By the way LED-LCD has less life than plasma. I think 60000 hrs.

For all those who are looking out to buy wifi dongles, I would suggest you buy the universal wifi adapters instead, all you need is just a network port and it will work, since these are universal they will work with any device that has a network port and these are cheap too

I meant that since the usage would be quite high wouldn't a Plasma lead to hefty bills as compared to an LED TV?

BTW any recommendations on VFM Plasma/LED TV?
