Though Sony and Samsung have the same panel, I would not recommend Samsung R18 for daily viewing due to the poor picture processing of Samsung. It's good only for movies & HD not for daily standard def signal. Try watching a cricket match on not so clean signal for about 10 mins and your head will start feeling heavy...

We are taking about LCD TVs here. Don;t know about earlier, but since last year or so, all Sony TVs use their own panel, from their partnership firm with Samsung.
I was just trying to point out,do not believe in the brands ,believe in what you see rather . test the tvs ,play dvds ,movies ,cable before you actually sign the dotted lines .

i am looking for a 32" LCD. budget is 40K, can strech a bit, but would prefer not to do so. viewing distance is about 10 to 12 feet. Would pefer Sony or LG
the main purpose of this LCD would be to watch TV, and to be connected to my PC, i'll get rid of the 17" LCD Monitor.

What are the connection options i have from the PC to the LCD,
S-Video - Not happy with picture quality
VGA - Never tried.
HDMI - Never tried.

Would i need a better VGA card on my PC for VGA or HDMI display to the LCD? i know i would need to a card with HDMI out to use HDMI.
But what is the difference betwen VGA IN and HDMI IN? how does the quality differ?
The distance between the LCD and PC would not be more than 2 meters.
Thanks guys, waiting for your response.

You know where to get Sharp or Toshiba in Delhi. Right? call the dealers/Visit them personally and check which ones give you the best bang for the buck.
Both brands are excellent so it boils down to features and VFM end of the day.

A good geforce or Raedon card will serve you well. Get whatever the latest series you can at a price point that seems good VFM to you.

Sharp 32 was being quoted at around 41K here in Kolkata. Did not ask the model number.

Most 32" LCDs are around that price point.

Saw a 'high-end' Philips for around 47K. Again did not enquire about the model number.

How much does the Pearl Black LG 32 cost?

The High end (if you can call it so) now costs 42.5k now. I checked it up in Philips Arena Jayanagar.E-zone (koramangala) is asking for 42.9k for the same model. The model no is 32PFL7422. I somehow liked the picture quality when on HDMI or component input. But as usual the cable link sucked and Tata Sky was also not very good. But they told me that Tata sky signal at home will be lil' better as they are splitting the signal to connect to different TV's.Don't if that's right.
They also told me that another 32" philips model with 3 HDMI input is coming to the market but they were not sure what price and exactly when(model is 7622 I think).
Also seen the 100hz Panasonic model 32LX700 @e-zone.It was good but I was unable see the advantage of 100hz when I compared the philips and the panasonic. At least they looked similar to my untrained eyes.price was 60k :-(
Also saw the Samsung LA32R8(@Viveks,JP Nagar), didn't impressed me much.I found the colors bit too unnatural, may be the settings was not correct as I've heard good reviews about this model. Will need to check out in some other place.Price quoted 49k.
Considering the price point I'm thinking about Philips.I already have a philips CRT and I really liked it and never had any troubles for last 7 years until now.
Anyone having the aforementioned philips LCD please comment.I'll mostly be using the TV for watching movies from DVD and for my room 32" is enough I think.
Regards,
Kaushik

100Hz difference will only be noticeable in fast moving scenes like a football match panning scene.

Philips current crop ain't that great and if you want philips you shoudl wait for a few months till this range is available.

Consumer Electronics Show 2008 - CNET Asia

These have the best picture processing engine available in the market and will revolutionise the LCD TV segment in terms of picture quality.

But Vid, all that you've mentioned are in 42" and up, not in 32". And the 32PFL7622 will also come with DNM.But that'll also take an month or two.

oops, Sorry about that kaushik, got a bit carried away with the Philips models. lol.

I mentioned earlier that in 32" there are 2 100Hz models, the panasonic 32LX700 and the Sony Bravia 32D300A. The D300 will soon be replaced by the D350 and will no longer be available in 32". The D350 will be a full HD panel but will lose the 100HZ motion flow processor.

Lately after comparing lot of LCDs and Plasma in home environment (my friends residences), my buying preference is moving from LCD towards Plasma technology...
Reasons:
1. LCDs strength is showing static / slow moving pictures, not the fast moving scenes. I have scene all the latest technologies like 100 Hz/5ms, etc, but Plasma still holds the ground by couple of years on this front.

2. Perceived resolution - Moving picture resolution. (usually the screen resolution is measured for static image / no of pixels), however for moving picture (movies) resolution means that how many pixels the TV can display clearly.
For a footpace (speed) moving scene (image moving across at 5secs). A 720 lines native resolution becomes
A Plasma display shows 700 lines
An LCD displayes 300 lines
120 Hz LCD Displays 600 lines

As the image speed increases, the LCD moving picture resolution significantly deteriorates due to motion blur.

3. Contrast Ratio - most of the contrast is measured with full brightness, however we actually watch in low lit homes (as compared to showrooms), for this brightness should be reduced. This leads to further reduction in already low contrast ratio of LCD. This is to the extent that on some latest TVs you get negative image like feeling in dark areas.

Sorry to kick this LCD vs Plasma debate earlier, but after actually viewing the sets, I am getting converted from LCD lobby to Plasma lobby and thought I should share my experience with others...

I got the same samsung model R81B for 80K-2.5K ( through a scheme) during Diwali. I think its price should be same or lower now, so you can haggle up to 77.5K. I am thoroughly enjoying this TV
