Go for it, if you so strongly feel for it. But I would insist that you wait for few weeks and see both new Pana and existing Pio and then decide.

All these reviews are for models which are not available in India, so we can;t entirely rely upon them, like the Pana model here do not have THX which was available in the one CNET reviewed.

There is no absolute level, you feel it is good only till you want to believe it so. The moment you see something better, it's not good any more

I am kind of perfectionist and am waiting for the 10th Gen Pio, which would hopefully have absolute black, at least blacker than 9th Gen black, which would make further blacks, almost irrelevant. Hopefully by then Pio prices would also become more sane and I would be able to afford a bigger size. Sometimes procrastination & greed helps...

did you guys try the asia cnet site for reviews
Panasonic Viera TH-42PV8 (42-inch plasma) Overview - TVs - CNET Asia
I am sure the US cnet site is not the only one reviewing plasmas

I guess at this stage the best advise would be a self audition! Take a friend along and check out both the screens first hand and then weigh the VFM factor!

My two cents!

Why wait a week. Both are available at the same showroom I am going today.
On waiting for the next gen Pio, that would be then waiting for the next to next gen Pio, the size is 50", and the desire is now (of course there is no need, only desire, which does not equal happiness at all).

Is Pana 11th generation available in Delhi? Please post your side by side comparo between PV80/the Kuro...

I didn't recommend you to wait for new Pio, because that is available only in 50" and above, whereas you need a 42" one. Moreover all new pio will be full HD and also outside your current budget.

Mods, request the thread to be renamed as "Buying a Flat Panel TV"
or "Buying a LCD / Plasma TV"

The 11th gen is PV8/PV80/PV800. The first two were launched last week (were on the website before that) but are expected at nearly all stores in the next few weeks. The full HD (800 series) is expected to be launched later in 2008, but only in 50 and 65. See the news story I had posted on 14-7-08.

Some stores in NCR (incl. the one I will visit today) have it and also the Pio. 42 and 50. The next gen Pio are available in the US, are expensive, and big; and so not relevant to me for at least the next 2-3 years. If they are available here, then I can buy another. Pio 42 on a standalone basis and even on comparison with Pana PV8/80 is a worthy choice, if I can get it at a 30-40% premium.

I am not a TV expert, but will still try to post a comparison between PV8 and Pio 42.

I would also suggest changing the thread name. For rookies like me, perhaps it should also say `non-CRT'.

The 9th Gen Pioneers are supposed to have incredibly good black levels. 0.0031cd/m^2. Here's a nice link

Pioneer PDP-LX5090 Review: Kuro 50" HD 1080p Plasma TV

BTW this site rocks for HDTV reviews.

With my 9-year old 29" Toshiba starting to show it's age I almost got a Sony KLV-46W400A, especially after the glowing reviews it's sister, the KLV-40W400A, received in this month's "What Hi-Fi". But now, after going through this thread, I'm confused again !

Could anybody direct me to a Pioneer dealer or retailer in Chennai from whom I can demo, & possibly buy (with B&W) a Kuro plasma ? The primary use would be with a XBox 360, secondary use would be with regular cable (set-top-box). Plasmas figure quite a bit in this thread, but the magazines like "What Hi-Fi" seem to give them the cold shoulder, why's that ? Is it because of lack of Full-HD ?

I bought a Pioneer 42 Kuro yesterday and from my initial viewing of a DVD, it is simply great. Do not know how a Pana 42 would have looked like, but Pio 42 is very rich and good. Get a good sound speaker and say goodbye to theatres (well not because a cinema cannot be beaten) but on small screen, Pioneer could be the best. I must thank ROC and others for this.

Bought Pioneer 428XG from Pioneer service centre in NOIDA. It is listed at Pioneer's website pioneer.co.in under where to buy, service centre, home entertainment. One is in Bangalore too. Got it for 104 (excl. bill, but including warranty). Bill means 4.25% VAT. The person to be contacted is Sandeep 0997105666. While you are there, also check out Panasonic (he stocks those too).

Well done on your purchase. Pioneer have always made exceptional products. I have had a Pioneer DV636 DVD player for a good 8 years and it still looks good and plays everything.

Is it wise to mention the place does special cash prices (ie excluding VAT) ? We don't want the owner to be raided and harrassed do we ?

I am sorry for that. I was unaware that this could happen.
