| There still seems to be confusion on the plasma tv vs. lcd tv debate, let me again summarizr the pros and cons of the two - Plasma tv advantages - 1. Better contrast ratio 2. More natural colour displays 3. Better brightness (1200 cd/m^2 vs. 600cd/m^2) 4. Better viewing angles 5. Cheaper on a per inch screen basis 6. No time-lag, blurring of fast moving sports/action images unlikde lcd tvs LCD tv advantages - 1. Lighter weight 2. Easier to install 3. Available in smaller screen sizes From the above its pretty evident that from a viewing and picture quality perspective, plasma tvs are way ahead than LCD tvs, especially for screens above 37 inches. They offer more natural colours compared to artificial looking bright images of lcd tvs, better contrast ratios, no image blurring and are also cost effective. Thanks |

| Senior - BHPian | Mrhap, nice comparison? So why is LCD creating such a brohaha in the market if Plasmas are so hot? We hardly see people buying plasma over LCD? Also, what is the life and mainteanance comparison of Plasma and LCD? And, which according you is the best brand and model in 40" screen size in Plasma and why? Thanks !

| Senior - BHPian | lcds are newer technology and will definately improve in the next few months. sharp already has the response time down to 4ms. thats half of the normal 8ms most manufacturers offer. i dont find the lcds picture artificial and maybe thats because of the settings on the tv you viewed. the samsung bordeaux lcd has 15.4 billion colours whereas the samsung plasmas have only 549k colours. the full hd lcds are cheaper than the full hd plasmas. the price diffrence between a 40inch plasma and an lcd is only about 15k now. and the viewing angles on an lcd are just about as good as a plasma. ![]() mobike 008 - thats why people buy lcds over a plasma. the lcds have a life of 60,000 hours. | Thanks for the queries and additional responses. My comments have been based on an extensive study of at least half a dozen websites, forums as well as personal visits to quite a few dealers, retailers. As far as power consumption goes, its more or less a myth. LCDs have a constant power consumption while the plasma tv consumption vares according to the image being displayed. At some points it is more, other times less than an LCD tv. Over all, there is not a difference of more than 10-20% and even then it is still lesser compared to the standard CRT tv that most of us currently use. Secondly on the point of heat generation, the viewer usually will sit 9-12 feet away, and therefore that again is just a theoretical issue. I have stood right next to 6 plasma screens all placed together, and not felt anything. As far as colour reproduction goes, i re-iterate, plasma tv colours are more natural looking and less garish/artificially bright. The brightness/garishness is especially experienced if lcd tv is viewed at night in a dark room. But again, this is a subjective issue, some people like their images to be really bright, so all i would say is compare the two, not in a showroom setting, but in actual bedroom settings. If you like a home theatre experience wherein you will see movies at night in a dimly lit room, please experience the tvs in this atmosphere, the lcd tvs can cause an eye strain after some time. Yes, lcd tv is newer technology , and it is best suited to the 37 inches and under category. Over 42 inches, please compare and decide. The best 42 inch plasma tvs are Pioneer and Panasonics followed by Hitachi, Samsung and LG.We have a few industry experts in this forum, maybe they can add their comments. |

| Distinguished - BHPian ![]() | The plasmas are still generally available in 1024X768 pixel resolution. The LCD's now go upto 1920X1080 pixels.

| Time for me to resurrect this thread, as I am on the lookout for a 32" LCD. I initially was planning on picking up either the Sony Bravia S2000 or the Samsung Bordeaux 32". On reading that the Samsung had no means of adjusting the backlight I had almost decided upon the Sony, which also had an extra component input. I decided to take a couple of days to read reviews/browse forums, which unfortunately hasnt helped me in the slightest. I now have to decide between the sony s2000 and the v2000. Im also considering a philips 32", But given the price, and the unknown levels of service(well to me atleast) im not too sure. Now it appears that the samsung neo mosel is also available in a 32" size. Which tends to complicate things a lil bit ![]() The TV is going to be mainly used for DVDs, and gaming. Now the problem is apart from an X360, all the other gaming is going to be done on my older systems, which support only standard def and over composite cables :( So i need a TV that can display standard def stuff decently enough. So Im hoping someone out here could point me in the right direction as i sure cant make up my mind. HELP!!!

| damn!! So out of the other 3 - The sony s2000, v2000 and the philips, which one would you recommend? I need decent standard def quality, which i read somewhere that the philips was excellent at. The Bravia V series was rated quite brilliantly everywhere though. But do the extra features over the S justify a 15k price difference?
