Buying a LCD TV - Page 69 - Team-BHP

So Pioneer is outsourcing it's Plasma panels to Panasonic going forward (may be 2009 onwards) - to get lower costs. Just like most LCD mfgs have combined their panel sourcing. This would also help Pana is moving towards 5 Lumen /watt (compared to current 2.5 Lumens per watt). Higher efficiency would mean more brightness and lower circuit costs.

It would be interesting to watch development over next few years.

on a break to kodai... i was staying with mahindra zest... all rooms had LG LCD while the main lounge had a LG plasma (forgot the model numbers)

the transmission was lousy for both... but the plasma look good compared to the LCD.

if and when i am planning to upgrade my TV (right now have a pana 29 inch)... i might have to rethink of plasma

That may be because of the input feed. It cant be blamed entirely on the TV

the feed was the same... one in the cottage and one in the lobby... i checked it in 2 rooms (for lcd)

Nothing surprising, Plasma's can handle noisy signals better. That is why I feel that for standard home TV, Plasma scores over LCD. In terms of:
1. Brightness - for home use, lesser bright screens imply low strain on eye
2. Black levels - better shades and color reproduction
3. Motion resolution - very little resolution loss
4. Better Noise reduction

Is Panasonic going to introduce 80series of plasma in india.Today I went to the dealer asking for the price of PV70 and they said that it is not in stock .He asked the Panasonic office in cochin and they said it is out of stock in company,instead they only have 50PY700 with them..If the new PV80 series is coming soon it is definitely better than the current one having panel life of 100000hrs. So shall I wait for the new series or buy the current one?

When I called Pana India couple of months ago, I was told that the 2008 models won't be out until July/Aug. He was quite reluctant to talk about the 80 series and was trying hard to talk about the 70s.

None of the dealers/company will give you advance information about their new models, just to ensure that their existing models move quickly.

What has Sony U series got to offer, haven;t heard about it yet...

This is the model I am talking about.

Sony BRAVIA KLV-37U300A/E32 - Sonystyle.com.hk

My other option is a 40" V Series which is 20k more. The 40" is about 6cm wider and 2 cm taller and Im not sure if it is really worth the 20k more. The brightness, contrast ratio and resolution are about the same in both models.

The U Series has something called CCFL whereas the V Series has a BRAVIA ENGINE / Live Colour Creation / 10-bit Panel. How much of a difference would that make? Is it worth the extra money?

It will be used for watching DVDs and regular tv through Tata Sky.

CCFL is a backlight technology, and if I am not mistaken that is what is used in all LCD TVs to light up the screen. Whereas Bravia Engine, LCC are picture processing engines.
10-bit panel means how many shades of colour the picture panel can reproduce.
They are all independent.

Instead of the V Series, why don't you look at the D series 40". It costs marginally more than the V but has Sony's Motionflo (100Hz), 24p playback for Blu-ray and other HD content and an extra HDMI input. I must admit though that this model is tough to find among the dealers you really have to look hard. Most guys push the V! IMHO I think that this fits perfectly for the Indian market where there is lack of HD content hence Full HD panels don't make a compelling case.

Are we expecting any major revamp in all the LCD's lineups in INDIA because of the Olympics?

Recenly noiced that samsung has launched full HD series don't know about sony.

So is it worth to for few months or can we safely buy the current models ?
