The limit allowed is 15,000 Baht. Anything over that is taxed at (10% of the difference between India & Thailand price)

They have a ready price list.
A friend's 42 LG LCD (which he bought at 19,000 baht) got held up and he had to pay about Rs 2-2.5k as duty, which is negligible given the price is double in India.

I had no problem getting my 50 inch on Emirates. The customs at bengaluru Airport are greedy though.

Customs too has access to the World wide web and wonders they know how to use it too. These guys have the price lists of all sorts of stuff from electronics to perfumes to outdoor gear, computer/automotive parts and accessories etc etc. They assimilate data from popular department stores, wholesalers from the Gulf, South East and trading posts like H.K. etc. They will generally accept the invoice you are carrying as valid proof but get on their wrong side and they will fish out the highest price on the web (usually the manufacturers price list) and come after you with all guns blazing.

Last time Sony made a profit in TV business was in 3Q 2004.

It stopped making TVs soon after that. Now all Sony TVs are manufactures in a Samsung/Sharp facilities where Sony had some stake. Sony is selling stake in Samsung JV.

With this, Sony will might just a marketing company for TVs and would leave manufacturing to Sharp.

Confirm what aircraft will be plying on your return leg and the max size of panel that can be accommodated in the same. The check in staff on your outward leg else the airline's customer service department in Dubai should be able to help you with the information.
Thanks Khoj , after readinhg your comment I called the airlines , they told me that they don't have any size restrictions . Which I think is not correct. Will call them again maybe I talked to a guy who was not very well versed about the rules.

Here are some links
LCD Vs. LED Vs. Plasma
LED LCD vs plasma vs LCD | TV and Home Theater - CNET Reviews

Now in short the LED's are the latest and Plasma's are the oldest, but this does not mean latest is best and oldest is worst.

In terms of picture quality, LED and Plasma would offer you best clarity but LED's would be twice as expensive as Plasma. LCD is the worst of the lot in terms of picture quality and color reproduction.

Please choose the right TV that matches your expectations on picture quality, Color, and Price (Which in my view is very important)
Thanks for the links Mayank .. I am still confused about whether should I go for LED or Plasma . LCD is out of consideration .

I checked out a Samsung 3D LED TV (Passive Tech) 40" . It is for AED 4000 around 59000 INR . I already have a Samsung 3D blue ray player which I picked from USA earlier this year .
Other model was LG 42" 3D LED (Passive) for around 52000 INR.
What you guys think about these 2 models or can you suggest me something better in similar budget

In view of Sebring's post above it seems there are some changes in the scenario. My post was based on experience my cousin had while flying in from Abu Dhabi just prior to Diwali this year wherein he had to call in a friend to the airport to take back the panel.

Well which is better than which is very subjective. Facts are that Samsung is the new uncrowned king with their new 8 & 7 series, they generally tend to have all of the available ports and current standards for connectivity etc and make the complete tv in house.

Sharp is the undisputed leader in Japan and the EU. Their 830 Quattron 3D series units are completely made in Japan and for me that is a big must have. Last weekend I checked and their 40" LED tv was being offered for 90K + freebies (MRP was 1.15 or thereabouts), the 46" was on offer for 1.25L + freebies (MRP of 1.45 or 1.49L) These are the latest in their international line up too.

Sony is very nice and all but somehow I have never liked the PQ of their LCD panels. Prior to the LCDs coming in, all of my TVs were Sony Trinitrons but not anymore. I have liked only their HX series. Having said that the HX has been priced out of the market.

I guess you should take a look at the demo units of Sharp and Samsung to see which one has the better PQ. Play with the menus and see which can be calibrated per your liking and also find out which has the longest warranty.

Which are the True LED models sold in India? Last of what I am aware of is that the LED TVs sold in India are LED backlit LCDs. No change in picture quality whatsoever, just lesser current consumption.

Nope, i don't think so,there is no such logic, i have been there recently, the only thing is that if our customs find it to be expensive they try to take advantage out of it, just stick to the protocol that one can bring almost stuff close to 30000 from abroad, if you have not bought anything else

I got an Samsung LED 32" from there and if you are still there, you can buy the same from MBK Mall, this is the best in Bangkok as AFAIK

True LED - What is that ?

LED is just the new lighting technology nothing else, the old technology was/is CCFL, the panel will always be LCD for these two back lighting techs.

As far as PQ goes, back lighting is one of the things that has a say in the same. Full array LED equipped panels are able to offer local dimming giving much deeper blacks and greater control over hue which definitely improve the results on screen. However full array LEDs are very expensive at the moment for example Sony HX 925 starting at 1,50,000/- for 46".

Besides LEDs are brighter than CCFLs and it shows. Check the Samsung 8 & 7 series or the Sharp Quattron 830 series. Even though they have edge LEDs they are still much better than the CCFL lit LCD panels.
