Try this, should do the magic Free-Codecs.com : Download K-Lite Codec Pack 3.01 FULL, K-Lite Codec Pack 3.01 STANDARD, K-Lite Codec Pack 3.01 BASIC : K-Lite Codec Pack is a collection of codecs and related tools .
Good luck ben !!
edit : open up the box and reseat the cables. Also try to boot into an ISO image CD/bootable CD and check if you find the same problem.
Best bet would be to try the OS CD itself.

has your computer become slow to do other tasks? like start up programs or games etc? maybe you have dirt on your cooling fans?
you could also try running scan disk and disk defrag though im not sure if that will help you.

Exclamation Sos !! Help !!

Thanks a lot for the suggestions, guys.... here's what i had done over the weekend.

* Changed the data cable leading from the mother board to the cd writer.
No use. Still plays the same.
* Installed K-Lite Codec Pack 3.01 Standard, rebooted, and still no use.
* Installed the XP codec pack from the same site, and still no use.

Really confused as regarding what to do now. Last resort is to download and install PowerDVD, and see if it makes any difference.

As of now, tried playing the DVD using Windows Media Player, and also using the Nero player. Both were bad. The frames move normally for a second or two, then stuck, then the same, and it goes on thus.

Try these :

Reducing color depth to 16 bit ( display properties )
Install latest drivers for your video card and motherboard BIOS.

Do borrow a DVD player and install on your machine and check if it has the same problem.
