Was the drive 'stuck' at a defective sector of the CD being read?
In that situation it would keep increasing the 'time remaining' display.

have been using vista for the last 6 months... works fine for me...never faced a problem... except when using it with an external HDD which was FAT32. the copying to and from this hdd was a little slower compared to a ntfs external hdd
