ok
do one thing then

connect iphone to pc.
then try putting it in restore mode.

This can be done as follows
1> Hold the Home button for 5 seconds
2> Without leaving the home button, Hold the Home and Power buttons for 10 seconds , then release the Power button and continuing holding the Home button until your iPhone is in DFU mode.

Hi,

I am in a bit of a worry, got this Iphone 2g, nice condition running on 2.2 Firmware, the prob is cant receive SMS, changed to different carrier still no luck, wot cud be the prob, rest all working great, can send sms easily.

Should I downgrade the firmware? If yes then can anyone tell the steps to down grade it?
I have just purchased (2 days back), and it was upgraded to 2.2 firmware from 1.1.4.

Is there any major problem with the phone ?

Try downgrading by downloading a custom older firmware.
Try

It has details on how to downgrade and jailbreak and unlock it.
If you still have a problem or with the downgrading, unlocking and jailbreaking part, gimme a pm.

I dunno if i'm right but what if you try the whole 2.2 jailbreak and upgrade thing a fresh. as in go iClarified.com and do the whole process again... I guess that should solve the problem.

AS i am new to Iphone thing, can any one tell me step by step how its done? The guy who sold me his Iphone had upgraded this Iphone himself.so i know nothing about how its done.

Please go to iClarified - Apple News and Tutorials - they have step-by-step instructions for each process on both phones (2G and 3G) and it cant get more comprehensive than that with videos and screenshots.

None of us here will be able to compile something THAT comprehensive. iClarified is the definitive site for upgrade/unlock/jailbreak and other steps.

Jus heard from a friend who had the same issue that tarun has(with SMS). He downgraded to 1.1.4 then the same day upgraded to 2.0 and later (earlier today) upgraded to 2.2. and interesting point he mentioned was that he maybe jus needed to do the 2.2 a fresh in the first place, instead of downgrading.
So abhinav, do you think that Tarun can redo his 2.2 upgrade. is that allowed as in - how can you upgrade to 2.2 when you are already on it

fill me on this.

If you are on xp and quickpwn doesn't work(sometimes it doesn't) , try it on vista.

This is how the jailbreaking and unlocking can be done.
But only if you want to retain your data, make a backup before doing anything

If you are on mac, then iClarified - iPhone - How to Unlock/Jailbreak Your 2.x.x 2G iPhone (Mac) [Updated 2.2]

Alright another update has been released with bug fixes and all, now running 2.2.1. Seems to have added more regional formats like Hindi, Marathi and Tamil which i dont remember seeing in 2.2. Safari has been optimized further.
