Here is the most detailed review on the best amature dSLR in the market, no it is not from Canon or Nikon. And I am not upgrading to it either.

wrotniak.net: Olympus E-510, a Technical Review

The review is way too long, feel free to jump from Introduction to the conclusions.

This is my new Toy. It’s a birthday present for me.

Shot with CanonPowershot SD600

It's a Canon EOS 400D (aka EOS Digital Rebel XTi) with a Canon EFS 18-55mm lens.

This is my first digital SLR camera and I am very impressed. I have quite a few point and shoot, most of them Canons. The 400D takes incredible photos even on the automatic setting. As for the quality of the construction, the 400D is extremely well-built.

The EOS 400D features:
• 10.1 Megapixel CMOS sensor
• Canon’s EOS Integrated Cleaning System
• 2.5” LCD screen with 230K pixels and 160º viewing angle
• High-precision 9 point AF system
• Picture Style image processing parameters
• DIGIC II image processor with 0.2 sec start up
• Digital Photo Professional RAW processing software
• Compact and Lightweight body
• Fully compatible with all Canon EF and EF-S lenses and EX-series Speedlites

What I like the most
• EOS Integrated Cleaning System
• 9-point AF system and Picture Style
• Supports all EF and EF-S lenses, EX Speedlites and EOS accessories.
• Price

Next in the list is a Tamron 18-250 or Sigma 18-200, still confued.

Some Test Images (Shot with the 400D)

Cheers!

Isn't that almost twice his budget?

Also, any opinions on Canon A710 IS? Is it good?

I got mine from US... S3 IS + Sandisk Extreme II 2 GB card + 8 nos 2600 mAh batteries + Fast Charger... all for 15k's

In delhi you can have it in grey between 14-15k's.

A710 is also very good, but the S3 IS is better.

That's sweet... I am only waiting to know the price of E-P1 which is the pro body to be released this year. If E-P1 is too expensive then, E-510 is the way to go.

Hellcat,
Congrats on buying a fantastic camera..i am sure you will have fantastic time experimenting with it. Regarding lenses i would suggest you not to buy any lenses with wide zomm ranges(18-200, 18-300) as most often with cheap lenses like Tamron and Sigma sharpness of pic produced either near the 200mm end or the 18mm end will not be so great. stick to kit lens for portrait and buy a 80-200.
regards,
Shaz

@Samurai: The Olympus EP-1 sounds like a great camera.
Its going to compete with Canon 30D and the Nikon D200.
The areas where the EP-1 scores are, Live view with multi angel LCD and Dust reduction.
Looking at all these features I think it wont be priced below 2000$
