Hey Everyone,
I have not bought an assembled / desktop computer in a very very long time. I am strictly a laptop user. The thing is that I have come across two gifted young boys who could use a desktop at home. I would like to buy them a decent computer that they can use to learn and have fun on.

My budget is between 15K and 20K. I got my office people to get me a quote but I think that this seems on the higher side.

2.0Ghz Dual Core
Asus Motherboard
1 GB Ram
160GB Seagate Hard Drive
16" TFT Flat Monitor
ATX Cabinet
Logitech Mouse and Keyboard
Sony DVD Writer
Price: Rs. 21,100

Out of curiosity, I checked the price of some desktops we had got for the office in October 2007 and I see this spec at Rs.25,800 which makes me question the above configuration even more (Since the drop should be higher than just 4K give or take due to a weaker configuration / elapsed time).

2.0Ghz Core 2 Dup
Asus Motherboard
1 GB Ram
160GB Seagate Hard Drive
17" TFT Flat Monitor
ATX Cabinet
Logitech Mouse and Keyboard
Sony DVD Writer
Price: Rs. 25,800

So can anyone tell me if the 1st configuration looks okay and / or could you maybe provide an alternative that will bring me closer to my 15K budget while delivering maximum value.

Thanks,
vcash

a CRT monitor + an AMD processor and motherboard combo should bring prices nearer to 15k, and should be more capable ( amd motherboards , with the exception of the ones with Via chipsets, tend to be better at games )

I would rather get them a LCD. Is Rs.7800 an acceptable price for a 16" LCD monitor? I asked for 14" or 15" but I am told that these sizes are no longer sold or available.

8k actually gets you a widescreen 17 inch monitor
9k -> 19 inch widescreen!

I had no idea 16" monitors were available at all

^There is one model in samsung, my friend bought it. Utter rubbish quality sadly, only VGA port that too, i think the 17" model with just few hundred Rupees more even though again they have analog port only, but they are decent enough for normal users .

If one is buying a Quad Core CPU and a dedicated graphics card, i would say going for a X38/X48 chipset based motherboard makes more sense as the quote mentions that there will be 8GB of RAM in the system.
Amey, I know nothing about PCs. What Motherboard would you recommend with the 9550? Does the chipset come on the motherboard?

Saiyan, what you just posted bounced straight over my head. Please take pity on a senile old man.

1. what is the power supply you would recommend? 500W? 600W? I intend to add 2 older hard disks (250GB and 400GB) to the same PC. The 400GB hard disk has my Music in lossless format and backups of my 250GB hard disk.

2. Also I will need a nice monitor. Say 24-26".

I intend to use this system for about 5 years. Atleast 4 years. So I want to ensure it does not get as obsolete as I have become. :-)

Thanks guys.

You have to decide which "type" of monitor. There are broadly two categories:

1. TN Panel (Cheaper, ok colors)
2. Expensive Panels (Excellent Colors, but not fit got gaming / fast action movies)

Average cost for TN -> 20k, Otherwise 40 - 50k.

If you have some time, hop into any Apple store in Mumbai. Their panels are of expensive type.

Compare that to colors on average laptops. That should give you an idea.

Or hop into any Chroma store and compare Dell Ultrasharp and Viewsonic side by side. (Do carry a CD full of snaps/ Videos to compare)

Example for dell:
Name: dell_lcd_types.PNG
Views: 186
Size: 58.6 KB

Navinji,
I will try my best to make things simpler for you,

1) As for the motherboard choice, as i mentioned earlier, X38/X48/P35/P45 motherboard would be a good option, amongst these here are my preferences,
1) Abit IX38 QuadGT - X38 based motherboard from Abit with superb build quality and rock stable.Used it so telling from my personal experience. Cost should be around 11k all inclusive.

2) Asus P5Q Pro - P45 based motherboard with good build quality, all solid capacitors, and so on. Should cost around 8k. I have used this board in a system i recently built for our fellow Tbhpian, 'Vikram18'

The chipset in case of an Intel setup consists of Northbridge and Southbridge, basically 2 chips that are there on the motherboard. The northbridge is basically responsible for all communication between the CPU and the RAM.
There are various models in this with added features, better performance etc.
The X series is the high end chipset range from Intel and P series is performance or mainstream kind of range. The X or P series carry no onboard graphics so motherboards based on these chipsets need a dedicated graphic card.

Instead of confusing you here, i would list a config that i feel would be ideal for you from whatever i have read and understood till now.

Intel Core2Quad Q9450 = ~ 14k
Abit IX38 QuadGT = ~11k OR Asus P5Q Pro = ~8k
2GB x 4 Transcend DDR2 800 = ~ 1800* 4
500GB Seagate SATA II = ~ 3.4k
Corsair HX 620W Power Supply = ~ 6.5k
CoolerMaster CM690 Chassis = ~ 3.8-4k
Samsung 20X Sata DVD Writer = ~ 1.2k
Dell 24" LCD = ~ 19-20k

I hope this helps

^Very good config Lord . Small suggestion to the above config. Get the Western Digital 640Gb , more space and better performance comparatively for few hundred Rupees more .

Pretty well put... Avoid TN panels like plague especially if you intend to do any photo editing. S-PVA/P-MVA are much better but the best of the lot are the S-IPS panels. Dell used to make a 20" with an S-IPS (2005FPW/2007WFP) but now it has discontinued the model :(.

I'd suggest you up your budget a bit and get a 30" Dell 3007WFP. Excellent color, no input lag and loads of real estate to play with. Among 24 inchers, the best of the lot is the NEC 2490WUXi but its hard to get and costs close to the Dell 30 incher.

Hey Amey, i did not know you are a Pro. How much more is the 9550 over the 9450? I assume till the 3.0Ghz 9650 is relased the 9550 will sell at a bit of a premium.

I cant afford 40K. 20K is fine! As it is the computer will cost about 60K so with a 20K monitor we are already looking at 80K then Vista, Office etc.. will push it to the 1L range. Ouch! All because I got me a Canon HF10! :-)

Amey's config missed out on a good 'card for navin's config. I nominate the 4850. since it costs slightly more than a new 8800 and has much better performance. Any other nominations ?
