I did not know DVDs cant handle HD!

My video clips are usually 10 mins or so. I figured I stick the SD card and blank DVD into my PC and cut paste from the SD card to the blank DVD like I would do JPEGs to a CD and the software (Nero 8 Ultra) would convert AVCHD to DVD on the fly. Not possible?

if you are using the DVD-ROM as a storage media, and your parents are going to watch it on a PC then sure , but if you want the DVD to play back on DVD players, no, they wont handle it. they do only standard definition video

hehe that 30" Dell will be more than 60k for sure :P. For 20k you'll get the Dell E248WFP (24" Widescreen, TN Panel).

My god parents will watch it on a DVD player. I thought DVD quality is quite good. Their DVD player is a HD DVD player.

I am not bent on Dell. Samsung/Viewsonic are fine.

Oh these kind of players do support HD. But these disk are not plain vanilla DVDs.

You will need to add $$$ for HD DVD/ Blue Ray writer to create these kind of DVDs.

But overall, first try creating SIMPLE DVDs with the PC you have right now.
Use Nero 8 for that purpose.

I have a hunch that even your current PC will handle 30 mins clips easily.

Oops I removed the hard disks and gave my current PC away. I had room for only 1 PC on my desk since I thought I'd need more power for AVCHD and a relative wanted a good PC I decided to keep the hard disks and give the PC when I could.

Guys the X38 Motherboad can only accept DDR3 RAM. DDR3 ram costs 10x that of DDR2 RAM today. SO the X38 Mother baord is a no go. What are the other alternates? I'm told Asus after sales is not good and my deale does not stock Abit (so the IP35Pro is not an option).

Ask for availability/cost of HP xw6400 Workstation. It might be an alternative to building your own system.

It comes with two Xeon Processors (each dual core) all cores running on 2.66 GHz.

I got it last month at work and it performs quite decent.

HP showroom should allow you to run Trial apps on it before buying. I guess CPU box costs close to 80k.

This way you can verify how much time it takes to convert 10 minutes AVCHD video into a DVD, before buying the system.

EDIT : Specs Personal Workstations - comparison results Small & Medium Business - HP

good idea. my nephew does FEA analysis (IDEAS) using a HP Xeon workstation that has 2 processors. I'll ask him if I can use his machine to test.

BTW if I want to convert AVCHD to Blu-Ray can I use Nero 8 Ultra or do I need some other software (Pinnacle Studio Plus 12, Ulead, etc)?

My idea is to use SD cards (backed up on USB Hard disks) to store the Blu-ray files. stick the SD card into a PS3 and voila Blu Ray video on the TV (via HDMI). The TV is 1080p (Full HD). Make any sense?

Nero 8 Ultra "claims" to to create Blue-Ray disc images. Nero – Features

Unfortunately I can't run any windows software on my work machines.

Will see if I can give you AVCHD->Blue Ray Image times (time it takes to convert ,2ts/ mts files to blue ray image) over the weekend. I run Solaris and Linux on this machine and they I can combine ffmpeg and other tools to process avchd.

Hey thanks NetFreak, BTW in post 207 you had posted a price of Rs. 1150 for a 2 GB. I cant find 2GB/800 for less than Rs. 1600 here. Not that I am interested in 2GB/800 I am really looking for 2GB/1200Mhz.

Thanks for your offer on the AVCHD -> Blu Ray times. I'll look forward to that. Last time I even saw Solaris was when Sparc 2 terminals were in vogue (I worked on Wall Street in the 80s). Yes I used to be technically savvy once! LOL.

Amey/Netfreak, I have zeroed in on either the Gigabyte X48-DQ6 or Asus P5Q3 Deluxe but neither is available, the dealers quote (17-18K each) but cant deliver unless it is against order. What is however are the Asus P5Q Deluxe and Gigabyte EP45-DS4P both 12-13K.

Can this camera be connected to a PC through USB? In that case, movies can be copied as m2ts / mts files.

Right next to the mini HDMI cable is a mini USB port so I assume this is the port I would use to connect the camera to a PC. but I could simply remove the SD card and copy the mts file as well only i wonder if the mts file can be uploaded and how. I am not very technical. can the mts file be uploaded like a simple xls/doc/ppt/jpg file?

this is the camera i am using.
