Yup... games are inherently single threaded. Of the few truly multithreaded games out there, most don't use more than two cores. The only games I know of that actually uses as many cores as available are Lost Planet and Supreme Commander. I'd wait until Quad cores become more affordable. Right now its just meant for pimping one's machine.

Default Why not a branded one?

So far nobady has suggested for a branded PC, I have tried so many configration in the market to assamble and I find Dell is realy giving good deals.

DellTM InspironTM 530

Intel® CoreTM 2 Duo Processor E6550
Genuine Windows Vista® Home Basic
19" Dell Wide Screen Flat Panel LCD Monitor (SE198WFP)
2GB (2X1GB) NECC Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz
250GB 1SATA 3.0Gb/s with Native Command Queuing

Including (Keaboard, Opt. mouse,NET. Card and other basic things)

Pricing
Total Amount Rs 30,526.00
Total Amount Before Tax Rs 30,526.00
CD/CVD/Excise Duty Rs 3,773.01
CST / VAT Rs 0.00
Total Amount Before OCTROI TAX Rs 34,299.01
OCTROI Rs 0.00
Total Tax Rs 3,773.01
Total Amount After Tax Rs 34,299.01

And above all its a Class a product. So hardware synchronisation is at best. I have used assambeled machines a lot but I find Class a products always perform better.
Its just my opinion.

Err what do you exactly mean by Class A product? A properly assembled machine will cost half of what Dell or HP or anyone else charges you. Its not very hard to assemble a machine either. Can be done by anyone in 30 minutes.

The only thing that dell makes that I really like are their monitors.

@BUSA: You can't compare the clock speeds of core 2 duos with the older pentium D chips. All core 2 duos run at lower clocks as they have a much more efficient architecture. For example to multiply two integers, a Pentium D takes 14 clock cycles whereas a C2D does it in 3 clock cycles. The low end E2140 runs at 1.6GHz but will outperform the fastest Pentium D ever made. (I think that was 3.73 GHz)

@chetan: Get any AGP graphics card like the ATI x1950 pro and more RAM. It'll be hard to get a new socket 754 board now and even if you do, it just wont be worth the money. The best option is to dump everything and go PCI Express.

The Intel Quad Core Q6600 is a great product. Its price acc to Intel site is $266, so if you use the present xchange rate of Rs39.5 it turns out to be Rs10,500.
I saw it listed at Rs.11,200 http://www.primeabgb.com/index.php?o...id=1&Itemid=28

I think you could get it for lesser price. I think its THE product to buy if you have the money. Very future proof.

The L2 cache funda, ......Tomshardware tested the effect of L2 cache on gaming, there is a good increase in fps 1MB to 2MB, but not so much from 2mb to 4MB. So 2mb is more than sufficient for gaming, what is needed is clock speed..... overclock it !

Thats why you could go for the E4400 if you have budget contraints, buy a good mobo for overclocking. Spend the rest of the money on a better graphic card and RAM.

Better still the E2xxx series have amazing overclocking abilities. They can be overclocked by 70% to 80%! They start at 2.0 Ghz. And they are the cheapest as you know. But only 1MB L2.

I second that. Since I first bought an assembled PC in 1999, prices have crashed and my income has increased. But I have had nothing to complain about assembled PC (in fact on my 3rd assembled PC). Branded PCs are OK if you have the money to pay 10-15% more, but can go with lesser customisation.

On an assembled PC, which as ROC said is not hard to assemble (unlike say an airconditioner), the advantages are lower cost. But vastly more than that is you can get what you want. I have felt that people go for branded PC because they think they get quality and peace of mind. But that is also achievable in an assembled PC at a lower cost and higher customisation. It is not that an assembler is putting some local processor, RAM, or HDD or other components. You can verify that on your own. Further, if you have a software glitch or hangups, both assembled/local PC vendor and companies are equally qualified and equally late. Just go for an assembler that has been referred and given good reviews, and then no need to shop around much.

This PC business is about selling, not marketing and post sale service.

Hey ROC, what do you think of this?

I went to the dealer and asked him for the processor E2140 that you mentioned, he said its outdated and showed me high series ones. But which had speed of 2.2GHz written on them.

He qouted Rs.8800 for NVidia 256MB.
He qouted me Rs. 1150 for DDR2 1 GB Ram, and if i opt for 2GB, single slot it would cost Rs. 3400

Since i am more into gamming he suggested i opt for Chipset which would cost around 5500

Now i am really confused, what to do?

The Biostar motherboard he said is outdated and wont support all the things and would cost around 2000-3000 since biostar is the last to launch the products after Intel,

BTW any difference between Core 2 Duo and Dual Core?

^^Your dealer is basically bluffing... please go find another one. He's simply ripping you off. The 8600GT costs 6 grand, biostar P35 is not outdated and the E2140 is still available. You can get a higher end CPU but its not worth it in your budget.
