Hey the WD Passport is a cool and sleek drive. I HAD one. I said Had because I dropped it once and it has gone to the grave now.

But it was a great drive while it was working. The only thing is the black cover is very shiny and will get scratched pretty soon. Otherwise a great drive. I really miss it!!

A WD drive is a super choice , i use the 160 GB model and the backup application included does a neat job. In fact if utilized fully you can work on your files on another PC directly on the WD drive and "Sync" the changes to your PC/Laptop once you are back ! The only problem is for some machines you may need a USB which draws power from 2 USB sources and the WD cost of the cable is rather high. I am sure any little shop in India will have this cable. Why the Drive needs additional power on some machines i do not have a idea.

Some of WD passport drives need more power to run smoothly thats why power from an extra USB is needed.160GB has so many bad reviews on newegg pro'ly only coz of this power issue. Not all laptop/pc can supply the power from one USB( I suppose its around 650mA for WD drives),then u need this Y USB power cable for that extra bit of power.

Now how to check if your laptop/pc's USB has how much power to supply to USB device.

Go to device manager>USB controllers>Rt click USB root hub>Properties>Power.

My laptop has 500mA so if i buy WD passport, especially 160GB one,i need this Y power cable.

Sounds rather steep. Last week, picked up a 160 GB WD for 3800 (inclusive of tax)

Indian way of doing it will be buying a Internal Hard Disk, buy external casing and enjoy. It will be very cheap. It will not have any quality problems
And it will be as handy as a harddisk

Default LaCie, anyone ?

Has anyone tried LaCie 120gb external drives ?
No extnl power supply, runs off the USB port, no software reqd - plug & play. USB 2.0

I got a quote of LaCie 120gb - 3750, 160gb - 4250 in BLR
Seagate is about 4250 for the 120gb, and 4800 for the 160gb.
