Default need a new cpu, but the big question - intel or amd??

hi,

i am buying a new cpu which will mainly be used for gaming. i am on a tight budget (8k) for my mobo+cpu. which is better, intel or amd?? will be adding a 8600 gt 256 mb ddr3 graphics card.

the most popular processor in this price range seems to be E4500. please suggest the best VFM option.

Incase you're not prejudiced (read AMD hater) then go for AMD Athlon 4200 X2 (2400/-) and Asus M2N-VM HDMI (3350/-) I thinks that's well within your budget...incase you really need a very good processor then go for the AMD Athlon 5200 X2...I think it would still be within your budget and this config should take care of all your home PC needs...incase you're planning to get a GPU then I'd say wait around for sometime; let the 9xxx series cards settle down in the market then the 8xxx cards will be dirt cheap...go for a 8800GT when it comes down to 7-8K range in another 6 months time...I'am currently using a 8600GT for about a year now...it's a good card but it's ageing fast...hope it helps

You can think of this,
Intel E2160 CPU = ~ 2.6k
Gigabyte G31 Motherboard = ~ 3.1k

This motherboard has onboard video, although nothing great, it will suffice.
You are still left with 2300 bucks. You can either get 2GB Ram or if you have RAM already, you can buy a basic Graphic Card like 7200GS or something.

let me know what you think.

Well if you are not going to overclock then go with AMD as its more VFM but if in near future you are gonna overclock then stick with intel.

My vote for AMD. Haven't bought a single Intel Since 2002. Though Intel C2D is better then AMD X2

I am using AMD 3500+ Athlon from past 3yrs,with MSI mobo K82Neo working just fine with 1GB Pcie-Nvidia Gcard 8600gt and 4Gb kingston ram, till now i havn't faced any problems except for the Bios Battery change and some virus attacks would recommend AMD... don't know about the rumors which was spread that AMD gets heated.i never faced any problem

have you seen the latest IGP mobo from AMD? The best thing about it is, if you plug in a ATI graphic card, it runs the graphic card and the IGP in crossfire(SLI) mode!

Its 2.4 times better than 690G, sets a new benchmark for IGP.

AMD's New 780G Chipset Has Powerful GPU | Tom's Hardware

Gaming performance:
AMD's New 780G Chipset Has Powerful GPU | Tom's Hardware

Its around $100 (Rs4000), add a AMD X2 4000+ Rs 2850.

---------------------------

I bought a 690G from Asus, about three months ago......... its outdated now. Wish I had waited and bout this one.

At heart, even i am an AMD Fan BUT current scenario weighs heavily towards Intel in terms of sheer performance.
AMD has better IGP solution boards, agreed but they seriously lose out on CPU performance.

Nice config, change that 8600GT to ATI Radeon HD3650, beats the 8600GT.Everything else looks fine, you dont need 3GB DDR2, that way you wont be using Dual Channel mode, its better you either go 4GB or stay 2GB.For 4GB you will need 64Bit OS.

at the low end , amd still rules in the price : performance category. an Athlon X2 4000 will beat the E2160 when both are at stock, but overclocked , the E2160 is far ahead.

simple story, if overclocking , get intel, else it makes more sense to go AMD

I don't think you should think of buying an 8600 GT at this momemt , with the 9600 GT already here, 8600 GT prices are bound to fall moreover better still get a 9600GT later it is atleast 90% faster than the 8600GT.
At this time better use the 8k to get a good motherboard-procy and RAM combo.

have no idea how to overclock a processor, but if it improves performance then why not.

that way if intel performs better when overclocked then why doesnt everybody do so???

revvedup the 8k is for my mobo+cpu combination only. RAM not included in this budget.
any idea as to when the prices may fall?? will definitely help.

well, for one , overclocking is quite like engine modding- you get more performance, void your warranty, there is a chance of killing your processor if you overdo it, and lastly, it depends on your motheboard. most basic motherboards dont come with the features you need for a useful overclock

cpu wise , an overclocked E2160 is far better than the X2 4000, but hte point of the motherboard is its graphics which are the best you can get on a motherboard. on the other hand , if you're getting an 8600, then the 8600 is better
