What's the point of launching it so late ? Isn't an all new iPhone expected this summer ?

If only Apple was a little more proactive in our market the iPhone wouldn't loose the race to BlackBerry so easily. The only thing working for the iPhone is the hype and product itself, if apple decides to step in and market the product instead of leaving it to these carriers the sales would rocket.

BlackBerry was following the same pattern for years and leaving the sales push to the carriers, of late they have become very aggressive and begun marketing the product on various platforms- Radio, print,TV,etc. Also there is not much delay in launching a new product, we had the Bold2 launched here offical within 2 months of it's international launch. These factors show the commitment of the brand towards the Indian market.

Unfortunately, it is the normal 3G phone. After doing a Google search, I found MobileMe which costs $99/year, and this has a tracking feature. The price doesn't make sense and I'm not sure if the software will work in India either.

I just picked up a 3gs a week ago. 3.1.3. Am using Airtel on it. I guess it was factory unlocked!

Does it mean that everytime I reboot I will have to unlock my phone!!
If and only if your iphone is jailbroken through "Blackra1n"! You can ask the person from whom you purchased it.
If it was jailbroken through qwickpwn or sn0wbreez or any other software than no need to worry.

A Tethered jailbreak is due to Apple upgrading their bootrom. If the handset has the old bootrom, no matter what tool you use (blackra1n, quickpwn, sn0wbreeze) you will still remain untethered.

Generally if the 4th and 5th digits from the serial number are less than 40 then it is on the old bootrom.

Is it officially unlocked/ factory unlocked? If not, yours is already jailbroken (Do you have Cydia/ Rock app installed?)

If not, anyways, a new jailbreak is imminent after the launch of OS 4.0

Geohot has already found a hole but doesnt want to release it now, so that it can be used on OS 4.0

Just wait for a couple of more months.

On the other hand, if the 4th and 5th digits of the serial number are less than 40, you can as well try to downgrade it using the link below (not sure if it will work unless your phone had an ECID SHSH saved on Cydia earlier when it was on 3.1.2):

[Howto] Setup local 3GS restore verification server (ECID SHSH)

If you are able to downgrade it to 3.1.2 (baseband will remain 05.12.01) you can still jailbreak it using blackra1n.

I bought an iPhone 3GS 16GB locked to Orange UK on firmware 3.1.2 & old bootrom for 28.5k grey market. It has a tethered jailbreak.
