Satnav tells different timeline to different users. I've a big trip coming up in mid-April (Gir Forest - rendezevous with the Lion King). Hope they release & give it before that..

Garmin has stated that its S/W for managing devices and routes for Mac "Roadtrip"
is retiring. They are asking folks to shift to Basecamp, which is their terrain S/W.

Earlier they maintained one for Automotive and one for trekking.
They are now merging the two solutions into Basecamp.

Its available for free download in Appstore.

Yes, NetFreak - Have you seen the US prices, typically $100 for a one time buy?

In most brick-and-mortar stores, these are available for a discount (treated as loss leaders).

So, pick it up from a store if buying in US. Most larger stores carry international maps too. After discounts, India maps would cost $45 or so and Asia + Australia pack would cost around $120

Noob question: will MMI maps work on a nuvi 215?

edit: turns out it can.

next question, will the nuvi 215 support way points? i.e if there are two different ways to go to a destination, can i ask it to use a particular route? or, can i select Destination A > Dest B > Dest C in one go ?

Edit 2 : this is what i am planning to buy - http://www.letsbuy.com/garmin-gps-na...vi-215-p-24577

More important question is are navtec maps good for India?
Garmin I thought the same sources are Nokia OVI (I think).

I was not sure if maps are that good.
Would like to know more from others.

Garmin uses Navteq maps i.e. the same as Nokia. They are pretty good for in-city travel but MMI maps are the best for inter city or inter state. MMI also has better POIs, though the latest version of Garmin maps India 2011.40 has closed the gap quite a bit.

I use MMI on my Garmin PND (came with Navteq). I also have the Sygic/MMI app/maps on my mobile phones. The MMI maps are much better for long distance driving and POIs. Unfortunately MMI choose to charge Rs 7K for Garmin compatible maps which is pricey.

Regards,

Thanks R2D2. That was exactly what I thought too. I was not sure about it.
Hence I wanted to confirm with others. I also read that Navteq were good for cities.
But MMI/Satguide are way better for the highways.

But sadly as you said MMI charges 7K for Garmin PND. Way over the head.
Though they are good, but a premium of 5K is a bit too much.

But surprisingly the same content is available for 2K for mobiles (Sygic on Iphone/Android).
I think that is a move to discourage purchase of Garmin hardware as they want to promote their own.

It is very obviously a method to discourage Garmin users and encourage the purchase of MMI PNDs. The MMI PNDs are rather disappointing when it comes to quality of hardware and their performance. Go with Garmin and you won't go wrong as far as in-car navigation is concerned. I like the 4"+ screens instead of the 3.5-4" of a mobile and then there's the battery life. IPs and 'droids have to remain plugged in whilst in use and if you get a call on the highway, your navigation gets cut off.

My use is as follows:

a) Garmin PND for navigation whilst driving (with MMI maps for added clarity)

b) IP or Android Mobile for in city use whilst walking or using public transport

If you have a IP or an Android grab the Sygic app as its a good deal instead of buying the maps for Garmin.

Cheers!
