My 2 cents for satguide or garmin city navigator navteq as it isd 1/8 the price of MMI.

What i do is. when i travel to each place i record the location on my locations and edit and add details. so in due course of time you can have your own custom made POI located on the maps
Satguide has caught up on that. Their maps also cover about 620 cites. In fact the 990 move came after they upgraded their maps.
Not sure on the POIs though. I never found Satguide to be lacking in POIs till date. If you dont find one, you can easily search in Google maps and add it on to the device.

Default PND with Google Maps?

Anyone aware of/used Google Maps on a PND? IMHO - a Garmin unit running Google Maps would be awesome!!

Not always.
Once i had to go to Adarsh Palm Retreat from Silk Board and Google Maps advised me to go all the way down Sarjapur Road, cross Wipro Corporate office, take the road to GEAR Innovative School and then approach Adarsh Palm Retreat. It made me go all the way around instead of just turning right at Sarjapur Jn and going down a couple of KMs.

If Google Maps is being run on a PND, say Garmin, would not the PND do the routing rather than Google Maps? I might be grossly wrong here but my understanding is that maps on a PND are only for mapping your position (LAT/LON) as indicated by satellites onto a 'readable' map. Routing logic is taken care by the PND. It is a different scenario when you are running Google Maps on your mobile, wherein the routing is also taken care by Google Maps.

I might be plain here...

Yeah. While it is good to keep the navigation expanding to more cities, it is equally important or more important to revisit existing cities' routes and re validate them to keep the information strong/correct. If SatGuide manages to do that effectively, they'll have a good customer base & customer loyalty.

I see most users opting for SatGuide maps here than MMI, which is what helped me finalize my decision. Happy with SatGuide.

I agree with you but I also feel that the biggest USP of Satnav is its price. Even in a hypothetical situation where say for e.g. Satnav has a coverage of 500 cities compared to 650 of MMI, folks would still go to Satnav bcos the diff is price is really huge.

True.. SatGuide is very aggressively priced. Rs.990/- for maps for non-SatNav PNDs is a steal [if I had someone coming from the US, I would have got a Garmin device too and used SatGuide's maps].

And I have so far not seen any major road not mapped or incorrect. Serves me well, until now [which is very limited experience]. I'm going to Mumbai by car tomorrow and plan to put the device on test [I know the route]. Will post feedback in a week or lesser..

Just spoke to the Satguide official. He confirmed that 725 cities are covered.
But what I am unable to get, what all upgrades happen to each release.

Latest map upgrade by Satnav is as of 28/April/2010.

I had ordered maps for my Garmin device on 28/Apr and i received maps dated 19/Jan. I called the customer service today to check my map version and found its not the latest.

Later today, they send me a link which is the latest (updated as of 28/April/2010) for PNDs other than the ones sold by Satnav (garmin, mobile phones etc).

Thanks bnzjon! Even I ordered maps for Garmin on the 26th April. After reading your post, I called up Satguide and they promptly mailed me a link to download latest maps. Downloaded and put on the device and Yippee! I have the latest maps now. Five stars to the Satguide customer care.

Thanks to team bhp I (or rather my friend) got saved from getting ripped off

charging 20k for the chinese stuff which costs 100$ on DX + 2.6k for the software is a ripoff anyway you look at it

and DX offers a better choice, and 1 years warranty!

planning to go with this
DealExtreme: $167.88 7.0" Touchscreen 400MHz CPU Windows CE 5.0 GPS Navigator w/ Bluetooth Handsfree + 2GB Maps SD

I recently switched over to navteq last quarter garmin city navigator maps as this above 28/april map is totally inaccurate in chennai city. it shows my house on the next street, though when i plot the same lat/long in google map it shows my house in correct locatiom. the mapping i think is not accurate.
does anyone else experience this problem ?
