I used such a unit for a year and later purchased Garmin. These units have lots of features, but they do not match Garmin in terms on robustness and accuracy of GPS Signal.

One advantage of Chinese units is Windows CE. Because of this you can use MMI/Satguide/Navteq or any other maps.

@wanderernomad. One has to ensure the GPS chipset is of repute and locks to satellite signals quickly from cold start and also don't lose signals when there's a rain or cloud that easily.
My Garmin 265WT worked and navigated me perfectly in a 7 hour deluge that sunk Konkan couple of months back. Not once did I lose signal.

Anybody using Garmin-1490 be able to give a feedback.

Also will there be satellite signal reception issue with V-kool sunfilm on windshield. (Side and rear films are Garware)

@Twiny: You should not have any problems with the 1490.

Sunfilm should not matter. Maybe the metallised (shiny) type can have a very marginal effect.

Since V-kool has metallic wires, it does affect GPS. However, there are solutions to this. You can attach an external antenna or you can cut few square inch of film just in front of GPS.

You can first use the GPS as it is and try workarounds if issue actually creates a problem with GPS fix.

@Twiny: I will suggest try it out before hunting for the antenna. You may find the signal level more than acceptable.

Hey Shamnath, can you post a picture of your GPS device on the ANHC dashboard? I wanna know how it looks on the City dashboard. Is it a MMI device?

I have atleast 5 friends who have been using these chinese units for more than a year now without any issues. Plus I agree that the GPS chipset should be of repute but these days when everything is made in China how can you be sure that its not the same chipset in yours too? But anyway it was a suggestion based on the practicalities and the VFM options. To each his own, but for newbies or first timers I am sure these Chinese units make much more sense and as pointed out above being windows CE they are very versatile and feature oriented.
@pamsihra : these things will run almost everything. My own brother is running both MMI and Satguide on his device. So am I though mine is not an outright chinese unit but a MIO.

These are the pictures on my ANHC with MMI VX140. This angle and position is pretty good for ANHC. I am planning to put dashboard sticker, since i want to go for front windshield sun-film.

Thats neat! Thanks Shamnath.

Also does the MMI box contain dashboard sticker as well? Or is it the friction mount you are talking about? Any link to show where this stickers are available?
