Dear Experts,
Would you tell me the difference between nüvi® 255W and nüvi® 205W ? Will both work with MMi maps. There is a feature called "Garmin Lock". Will I have to do any "jail breaking" procedure to load MMI and will it work normal?

MMI / SatGuide would work with both, its plug and play. All you need to do is insert the card in Garmin.

Thanks Netfreak , but will it need any jail breaking ,GARMIN LOCK is a feature in these devices ? Also which one is better 205W or 255W ? I am planning to procure it from US. Will buying any of these make sense over Quality and VFM in India or is there a better option. I am a novice in GPS. It will great if any of you could guide me ?

There is no "jail-breaking" required. I think you are expecting the "maps" to be software. No, maps are only data that come in the SD card which is read by the Garmin software in the Nuvi devices.

Get 225W, cost would be $120. It has bigger display + faster chip. This is among the best GPS devices.

Regarding VFM:

Instead of buying MMI, buy Satguide. MMI costs 7000. Satguide now costs just 500.

Since there is huge price difference, you can buy MMI later if you find that Satguide is not working as per your expectations.

@decode; I will tend to agree with NetFreakBombay. Since we do not use most of the features in India, just make sure you get a 4.3" or larger unit (all are W or widescreen). Also, consider a pouch/case and maybe a friction mount. I cars with a deep windscreen (like Civic) is is almost necessary. Also, SatNav sure beats MMI in price by a huge margin in price, and are good. I have been using mine for over 3 months. In fact I have been able to find places which are not there on Google maps!

Any special offer going on Satguide? I went to satguide.in to purchase a map and they are still charging 990/- it seems. Though I am sure 990/- is still a fair price; 500 would have been really unbeatable!

You get the option to enter the coupon code just before making the final payment. Once you enter the coupon code, the discount is offered and you have to pay only 475/- . The coupon code can be found in the other thread on Satguide.

Wow, after seeing all the recent posts, I am getting tempted to buy a Garmin Nuvi when I visit the US next time.

I have a couple of questions:-
  1. Does the device come with a car charger and a windscreen mount, or do I need to buy one?
  2. Will it stick to the windscreen as I have installed Garware Ice cool film on it?
Thanks

It does come with a car charger and windscreen mount. No need to buy it separately. No idea regarding the second point though.

It'll stick for sure; but check the material of the film, if it is metal based then satellite reception may be poor.
