Sam Bhai, you should NEVER EVER trust MTNL and BSNL. If you are a subscriber of theirs, you need to call them and confirm after they have confirmed to you. That's the norm. Now I will wait for you to complete before opening my mouth.

Please allow me to explain again.

You are expected to switch off and back on after midnight to activate free night usage.
For example - If your computer has logged on at 11.55pm (5 minutes before midnight) and you use the internet nonstop till 3am - you get charged full rate for the entire time. You MUST switch off/on after midnight to activate night usage.

You are not expected to switch off after 8am, in the morning the system automatically switches back to full paying mode.
So for example if you log on at 12.05am (5 minutes after midnight) and use the internet nonstop till 10am - you are charged for 2 hours between 8am and 10am.

Yes Steer, you put it correctly. The house always wins.

Correct JK - not PER day, IN day. You have free DAY usage of 1.25GB total in the whole month. Beyond 1.25GB you pay Rs.1/- per MB data transfer. Night (12 to 8) is unlimited. Trust me, I know what I am saying.

I have Airtel - 799 Plan ( Unlimited Broadband - Super Fast ) + Free Calls worth 250 every month.

I had BSNL Broadband - Bill's were exorbitant at times.

Waiting for the rest of the story. Hope the issue with the bill is sorted out.

This is how things work:

1. When you log in a "session" is created on MTNL system
2. When you log out, this session is terminated. And session details are stored in billing system. (details include start/end time and data transferred)

Now at end of month, ALL sessions that started AND ended in "free usage" period are not included in billing.

This is worst way of implementing free night usage, but with kind of budget /process MTNL guys have nothing better can be done.

I understand that Sam. The point i tried to make (which is the same as your explanation) was that they should be charging automatically after 8 AM whether you switch it off and on or leave it on. Why do they have to explicitly mention that ?

Does this mean the whole country has 'unlimited broadband' plan on the public carrier except for Mumbai ?

talk about discrimination .. Mumbaikars jaago

I am currently using Unlimited Triband on MTNL Delhi.

In a way, this is a better plan then most other "unlimited" plans that limit bandwidth to 256 / 512 kbps.

This plan lets you download at 2 mbps.

Downside : You need to set up modem so that it restarts every day at 00:30 AM and 07:30 AM.

MTNL Delhi has upgraded all broadband plans to 2mbps also.

IIRC BSNL also has an unlimited scheme for around 900/month.

MTNL Mumbai has been the recalciterant, it first delayed unlimited when it was launched in Delhi and then BSNL launched their unlimited version still MTNL Mumbai kept silent.

So basically whole country has unlimited on public carrier for 900 bucks except for Mumbai. Because MTNL Mumbai knows that people of Mumbai just will not protest against anything done to them. They will just bear it silently.

My net plan:
Airtel, unlimited, Rs 999+tax, 384kbps

My friend's plans(He has got two connections):
Tata VSNL, unlimited, 128bps, daytime
Tata VSNL, unlimited night (9pm -9am), 2mbps, nighttime

His monthly rate for both works out to about Rs1500+tax(approx)
He uses the dialer in Windows to automatically dial the appropriate plan and then uses his router to get wifi.

Yeah?
Well great job son, well done! Here’s your bill, enjoy yourself.

I am standing there, blinking slowly, rubbing my eyes in disbelief.

In my hand I am holding an MTNL telephone bill. It is for the month of May 2008. Number of phone pulses is 68, hence free and covered in the minimum amount. The entire amount is for Internet usage.

MTNL has billed me Rs. 14500/- for internet usage in one month.

Story to be continued tomorrow.

The Bold letter in Italics made me laugh, laugh and laugh more. You had a bad experience, but I think in the first place you should not have believed in them.

I assure you that you are not the only one to face this.

Read on my story:

Ok, with no offense, I think believing in BSNL, MTNL, etc is like believing that one day we will have more disciplined drivers.

This is my 7 th ISP ( Internet Service Provider ) in probably 7 years.
I had BSNL Home 500 scheme. It was night unlimited. 2 A.M. to 8 A.M. free ( I can do whatever I wanted but wont get charged ). Speed was 256 kbps to 2 Mbps!
My connection was from Alkapuri station. The charge was 500 + taxes + 167 for deposit. My friend also had connection of same scheme and it worked out ultra well, and in my case it didnt.

Mostly for the FREE time period, the link would be absent " Wow " and download speed was mostly 2-3kbps. Four months off and I have taken it off.
We spent 1872 rs. for just the router with Wifi for my sister laptop. My father has a habit of working in the morning at around 5:30 am. At this time mostly the internet wont work.

With BSNL, I never downloaded anything outside time limit, still my first bill was Rs. 5000/-. Now I am yet to earn a single penny in my life. Its my dad's money. It took me 3 trips daily for 15 days atleast to sort out the matter.

Right now my 7 th ISP is Reliance with a small "dish" installed on terrace.
Rs. 750 for Claimed 150 kbps speed. It wireless and works flawlessly.

Both these plans are NOT 2 mbps.

In other words, all plans except unlimited ones have been upgraded.

I am on Reliance WiMax as well. Pretty good, I use it with my WiFi router. No downtime so far. Waiting to see if it survives mumbai rains.

I am getting 770 bps in mornings, that is only possible with 2 mbps.

MTNL has not written that there will be no 2 mbps to unlimited schemes. It has written wherever feasible they will implement 2 mbps in unlimited schemes.

Broadband

It has two plans

1. TriB 749 NU (same as Mumbai night unlimited) and its 2 mbps
2. TriB Unlimited its 265 kbps

And its entorely possible that you are getting 2 mbps on 265 kbps plan (I.e. if you are on "TriB Unlimited -- 265 kbps"). Reason is line setting is not automated in MTNL. And its operators can assign improper bandwidth in DSL line.
