Probably the Grey Market Guy - As long as he gives me a sealed box with B&W, I really don't care. Target price is 19K. He is at 19.5 right now.

I was told that Nokia India wont honor guarantees for gray market phones even if it is B&W. any experience with this?

Default Gps?

I too am seriously looking at this phone. Have any of you owners tried the GPS feature? Is it better/worse than the other GPS phones out there? Any comments and reviews of same will help my decision.

Gears,
Red-One.

got this phone today and first impressions are very very good. its feels very solid, it fast and you dont quite realise how small it is unless you actually hold it. setup was dead easy.
i paid 19800/- from an airtel dealer - i am told the phone is from nokia india with a cast iron warranty.

Thanks redrage. I bought the phone yesterday. On GPS again, couple of questons which the shop sales guys were unable to answer. They called Nokia cust service and got the same vague answers.

1. The box says "3 months free trial of GPS Live" or something like that, so I am assuming after 3 months, GPS becomes a paid service?

2. Is there a free service (thru GPRS)? What is the diff between this and the "live" paid service?

3. I went to GPS menu but it is continually saying "no Satellite data available", "retrieving data" etc. I tried it outdoors. What am I doing wrong?

Gears,
Red-One.

@RedOne-

1) Yes, You need to pay for the service after that (Its presently quite expensive and i heard my colleague telling me it would be around 5k / year)

2) You can try google maps through GPRS but you need a secure and fast net connection for that ( I am using mobile office as my previous standard conn Airtel live was not good enough(secure) to run GPS).
In Live service the server downloads info from the satellite such as your location, updates in your city such as places, routes, traffic info and a lot of other things. Without this subscription you could just see the map.

3) Goto the GPS menu and into the tools -> settings , you need to define your net connection and then from tools -> go online (mind you , you need a fast mobile connection such as mobile office or vodafone access on which your connection will be secure).

nokia maps is free afaik. it is only the value-add features like voice navigation, landmarks etc, which are charged. however as red rage says, you can always use google maps.

Thanks! Hope the basic Nokia maps is available at all times. Can I download Chennai maps from nokia using broadband, transfer it to the phone's memory card and then use GPS without GPRS?

For Google Maps, I am planning to go for unlimited GPRS from Airtel; will that be sufficient?

Gears,
Red-One.

Yes thats the way for using Nokia maps.

However, Maps for Channai, Mumbai, Delhi and few other cities are preloaded on most GPS phones.

So you need not do anything for Chennai.

@ Redrage- When does the 3 month trial start? do you have to start it yourself or does it happen automatically?

Does the phone use the GPRS for getting the lat and long or does it happen when the 3 month trial starts?

You have to start it explicitly. When you start navigating for the first time, it will acquire license through GPRS.

License is tied to Phone+Number combination (IMEI+Phone number)

If you change either IMEI of phone or your SIM, you can reactivate the license for free. Just remember to revert back to original IMEI if you need to give phone for service.
