Operator has no clue regarding changes in settings, but has registered a complaint that they claim will be solved by dec 7. I know it wont. Will go to an airtel shop tomorrow.

Look at this. Its my 3g speed on my iphone 4s.
I know many Airtel users in Mumbai who have issues with the speeds on 3G. It seems to be an operator specific issue all over India.

Just did a speed test on my Vodafone 3G and Edge networks. Here are the speeds.

I am using IDEA 3G in Pune and the download speeds are very good, though I do not download much (limited plan Rs. 200 for 250 MB).
Recently I downloaded a 50 MB map from Sygic application and the download speed touched 400+ KBps. This is faster than my BSNL 2MBps broadband (wired). I am impressed with the speed.

My 3G network does not allow me to download any app above 20 MB. It recommends a WiFi network to save on my MBs. Does anybody know how I can disable this restriction? I can always call my cellular operator but I don't expect them to be of any help on technical matters such as this.

but if try to download anything else from some uploading sites then it doesn't give me any warning.

Yes, I use the iPhone 4. I have faced this restriction only when I try to download or update apps from the app store.

if you have jailbroken your iphone then you can download "3G Unrestrictor"
or something similar application from cydia which fools app store and other applications which strictly need WiFi, that they are using WiFi while it actually uses 3G/edge Data.
this will solve your problem. i am using it already.

Mine is the factory unlocked version. The restriction doesn't really bother me. I am on a 500MB 3G plan, so its good in a way to keep the data downloads under check. I was only curious to know if the restriction is operator or phone specific.

In your case it's good. I have 3GB plan, so i really needed to remove this restriction.
I also have factory unlocked version. Jailbreak is needed if you are really geek or wants to extend functionality of your phone.

Hi Naveen,

Did you get the comparative study? I am also looking for one.

Point me in the right direction if you can.

Try 3gsimplified dot com

I use the bsnl 3G specific card for my iPad. I need the 3G services only when I'm traveling or my wifi is down.

I used the site to select the best plan

I didn't get any comparitive study. But couple of data back I got a call from Airtel about 3g plan upgrade. I upgraded from 675 plan to 750 rupees plan. The upgrade i s from 1.25GB to 5.0 GB of free usage per month. That is good value for me!

I bought the Vodafone 3G broadband MiFi router to use with my wifi iPad. Speed claimed is 7.2 Mbps max but I get around 3+ most of the time. The MiFi router allows me to connect 5 devices to it wirelessly and one device through the USB cable.

Here is a snapshot of the speed achieved with 2 devices connected to the MiFi router.

Surprise! I am getting 3G in my Airtel prepaid, which has only the 98 Rs mobile office plan! I checked few times whether the balance is reducing, and it is not! Hurray!!!

(I had 3G disabled for the past few months in my phone... I just enabled it just to check.. I should have done that earlier!)
