I have recently dumped Aircel 3G for good, Switched over to Airtel 3G. Of late i had a lot of travel between Bangalore to Mysore or Mysore Road. What i experienced was once you are out of city limits most of the places you get only EDGE speed even inside Mysore. That really disappointed me. Even i went to Hampi, Badami etc. couple of months back and was really disappointed to get just EDGE speeds everywhere the moment I am out of Bangalore. Aircel does not have 3G coverage in Karnataka outside Bangalore, thats what i concluded. But within Bangalore I would rate Aircel as good as Airtel if not better.

That's interesting! Airtel and Vodafone use the same network for 3G Data services in Bangalore. Vodafone uses Airtel's 3G network for providing their services.

In Kerala and TN, Airtel uses others' networks (guess it's Vodafone in TN and Idea in KL)

I need some help in finalizing a good 3G provider for my IPAD. The main criteria I am looking at are good Speed, reliability and roaming/connectivity across the southern states. Checking various portals, I find every service provider have few extremely satisfied customers and a large set of dissatisfied customers.

Southern states I would recommend Airtel. I have used 3G extensively across chennai, Coimbatore and Bangalore and am fairly satisfied with Airtel 3G on my iPad.

Folks

How much does Airtel 3G cost now per month? I have a pre-paid airtel sim and have been paying Rs 99 per month for 2G so far. I heard 3G rates have come down.

Further, I was charged Rs 99 for 30 days only 2 days back? So if I upgrade to 3G, will they adjust that amount already paid for 2 G?

I don't know about adjustment, but for 3g, start with the 250bucks 1GB plan.
I've found it to be okay for moderately intensive usage.

No they will not adjust. If you put 3G pack now the 2G pack will get cancelled and 3G pack will get activated. So I suggest you to deplete the 2G pack and then put the Rs.250 pack for 3G. Speeds are good. YouTube videos play without buffering which itself is an indicator of good speed. Never bothered measuring speed in bps as I am never going to use it for heavy downloading.

I have Airtel PrePaid.

I am currently subscribed to the Rs 99, 250 MB for 3G.
When I recharged it, I lost the remaining balance on my Rs 98, 1GB, 2G speed plan.

I however don't find any difference in speeds.
My phone is usually in Hi Tech City, Rajendra Nagar and Masab tank areas.
I have never seen the 3G icon on the connection icon. 3G only appeared when I went to Pune.
Usually it only shows the E or H symbols.

I recharge using http://www.rechargeitnow.com
They show all the plans and you can select accordingly.

I don't have any automatic subscriptions set up.
If your car and phone both have bluetooth, use an app like TuneIn to listen to some good music while on the road.

Not sure what handset you have, but my SE Xperia handset shows 3G when it is connected to a 3G tower and it is communicating with that tower. Once the data connection starts, the icon is changed to H. If I am hooked to a 2G tower, it shows E.

I did not know this. Thanks.

In Pune my phone always displayed 3g.
In Hyderabad it never shows 3g.

Also it has shown h even when I was subscribed to the cheaper 2g plan.

Thanks guys. I'll switch over after around 20 days so that I get to use what i've paid recently for 2G.

My idea of 3G is to use the smart phone as a hotspot when my main internet provider fails at home. So far I've been paying Rs 350 for a tata photon backup, but now 3G seems cheaper. I'm aware that the phone may go dry in an hour's time when it runs on 3G and as a hotspot, but that is the max time I'll need it. I can anyways keep the phone charged to the socket to prevent battery drain.

If your primary usage is im, email and team_bhp, I doubt if you will even bother switching on your laptop.
