Default Motherboard for Win 98/ME

I have an Intel 845 at present, which is about 5 years old. It's running Win ME and Windows XP as dual boot. I need the continue with winME as I have certain software that is quite indispensable.
Is there any m/board today available that would allow me to continue with this set-up, running ME and Xp in dual-boot? I understand that drivers for ME are not available for any of the new m/boards, but also heard that the Intel Atom may be compatible?
Appreciate any inputs on this.

I run Windows 98 and XP to test software build for compatibility.

Most ASUS motherboards + AMD Athlon XP are completely compatible with 98/XP. Drivers for both OS are available for download on ASUS website.

Anather solution would be to run XP and run Windows ME inside a VM.

I dont think any MB will stop you from using both OS. Just ensure that you format the HDD with FAT32.

Only hurdle will be getting proper drivers for win98

Most of the Motherboard in the market can run XP and ME, if you get MB for say XP than it will run ME too, drivers for ME may problem, you can run your software in compatibility mode in XP.
I know computer shop [and freelance computer guys] will tell you something different.
Intel Atom may be compatible but will be slow for a desktop.

cut the answer short, newer mobo won't support as there are no sata drivers available for win98 and Me.

Which software are you talking about. as XP runs most in compatibility mode.

ANd yeah new 845/865 are available for about Rs,2000/- from simmtronics.

Why not run the software in a VM? Tried, tested and known to work.

I would be using one IDE drive (with the ME) and the rest would be SATA devices.

The software is a legal database from Nicnet running on Folioview, that needs a dongle on the parallel port. It does not run on XP.
Any website for simmtronics?

simmtronics Semiconductors Ltd. --> Series of Motherboard : INTEL, NVIDIA & AMD

new dongle drivers can be downloaded from their respective website. also some newer boards will have lpt, if not there is always an option of PCI-LPT card.

Thanks mate. I'll ask my tech-man to suss out simmtronics.
It's not just the LPT availability. It's something to do with XP not seeing the dongle.
On the present mobo, I have ME and XP as dual boot, and it's only XP that has the issue even though LPT is available as it's the same mobo.

Even on ME I had to have some "emergency boot" routine introduced before it started recognising the dongle. It's something to do with DOS too. Does it make sense?

Sorry for the back-to-back.
In Windows ME, my software would not work initially, as ME could not see the dongle. Then I got my software to work by adopting a "Real DOS-Mode Patch for Windows Millennium By Reines [MFD]" routine, as described in this link - Real DOS-Mode Patch for Windows Millennium

I feel getting a similar DOS-mode patch in XP may solve my problem.
Any gurus here with ideas?

It's a legal database (Supreme court decisions 1950-1998) created by National Informatics Centre, under the name "JUDIS". It's on one CD running under Folio Views, and requires the dongle to work. The program can be installed in XP, but it asks for the hardware lock (dongle) and then exits. The dongle is very mush there, but XP cannot 'see' it.

When I called NIC a couple of years back, I was shunted from one peon to another until finally someone little more computer-savvy apologetically told me: 'Sar we are not supporting this any longer, there is no further version available".

Easiest way out would be to :
  1. Run Windows XP
  2. Run VMware player
  3. Run Windows 98 in VMware player
  4. Redirect LPT1 to player (It would not longer be visible in XP)
  5. Run software inside Windows 98 on vmware player
PM me if you need help with running this setup.

Would not cost anything to try since all these s/w are free and legal. (assuming that you already have Windows).
