Default Migrating to Thunderbird

I am a long time Eudora lover. However, with Eudora apparently on its way out I decided to migrate to Thunderbird (Microsoft cannot import Eudora settings & mail reliably after something 3). I am running Eudora 7.1 (never liked 8). Thunderbird is supposed to handle Eudora easily. In fact the Penelope (a variant of Thunderbird) is the foundation of the (apparently) now defunct Eudora 8 which was to b open source but has not progressed beyond Beta.

My Eudora folder (install, mail, address book, the lot) is 1.6GB. I was able to import settings and address book easily. However, when I tried importing the mail (it takes time, since it recombines mail & attachments), it worked but expanded the .profile (where mail and settings are ) to 62+GB. Has anyone done the migration or faced this problem.

Any help / advice will be welcome.

Is your mail archived server side? Like if you have gmail, etc. or personal mail server? If so, you can simply re-cache(1.6 GB!) your mail from server with IMAP account setup.
