p3 ? Laptops with desktop based processors like p3/p4 have bad battery life, they more of desktop subsi's. Look around for Pentium-M chip based lappies they are good in battery life and would be best in travelling

http://specials.rediff.com/getahead/2006/jun/06sld3.htm

my choice; teh lenovo

celeron laps are bulky, power hungry.

just read rest of your posts.

Get a PIII M processor based lappy. Try some IBM T series ones for 20k I guess. @ 2.2Kg you wont complain. See that you have 512MB to make it more faster

Why do say this? If it's out dated then how Apple is still using it?

Is it outdated because they're not efficient?

If that's the claim then I would like to invite you to see my desktop machine's performance. Four years old twin processors and only 450X2=900mhz....

By the way, I also use a Powerbook G4 17", which is two months old...

You maybe absolutely right as I dont use an apple. but My facts are based on information from www.apple.com

Apple itself has shown that Powerpc is less productive than the intel cpu's on its website.

As a matter of fact I didnt even see a macbook with powerpc anymore. Imac's do use powerpc's though.

Don't know if they are still selling it in India.

Yes, I read that...But how less is actually less in real life?

Example: 175mb PS file takes 20 sec to open including application...Not too slow for me.

my reqirement in a laptop is just to see Team - bhp , and just to chat !!!
m planing to buy a P1 or P2 for it !!!

please tell me , what i have to keep in mind , while searching a second hand laptop ,,, that too must be 4 or more years old !!!

2. > what is the life of laptop LCD screen ? &

point 1. p1 or p2 wont be a good buy even in a used laptop. look at atleast a p3.

there is not specific life of an LCD screen if maintained properly. give a look for Dead pixels though and light leakage if you are an expert( I dont think you will be affected by this.

I would recommend IBM 14 inchers to you with p-3. search and you will find something that fits in your budget.

I dont get it? both the laptops you have mentioned are catering to different needs. One is thin and light notebook while another is desktop replacement.

what do you need them for? I would prefer you buy from US with Coupons from Dell. It would be pretty cheap too.

Describe what your needs are and maybe I can letcha know which one is better.

There is a basic and small software for Dead-pixel. I think its called pixel buddy or something. It's basically a fullscreen colour changing program. If you see a small dot that is fixed and not changing colours. Its a dead-pixel.

Don't worry much about light leakage though. When in black screen you see some stripes of light illuminating the screen. This is known as light leakage. Light leakage according to me is not serious.

P-3 is a good choice.

Dead pixel? View a white page on full screen. Check for dark dots.

PIII ,(PIII-M would be good), 512MB, 30GB, PCMCIA wifi card ( add on), IR port ( IBM's haev it), dvd/cdrom.

Check battery life when you buy a second hand one.

the basic diffrence between a P-3 (M) and a just P-3 laptops are :-

anything else ??? inturms of performance !!!
firstly go for IBM's with a matte screen and p-3 M

P-3M is a mobile version and not thin and light. Cpu's with M have a lower power consumption figures. reduces heat, increases battery life, comes with downclocking feature and some enhancements.

1. It's a good laptop.
2. I hope you have bought it from US with coupons that give you immense discounts and add-ons.
3. Its A desktop replacement so be ready for that.
4. Screen is nice.
5. laptop is built well and is one of the more succesful models for dell. Similar to Inspiron 6000.

thanks devarshi, no ordered it from india itself. with my spec configuration it came to 61k about 5 or 6 k more than the US prices, but that was allright. yep, i know its a desktop replacement, dont plan to carry it along everyday, so no worries on that front. happy that you said its a nice laptop. had heard some bad things about dell.
