The most awaited feature on Google maps is starting to roll out soon. Goodbye every other navigation app!

That infact is not the case. Their chips are at the bleeding edge of technology. This time around it is even better because they are the best not only architecture wise but also fabrication which is 14nm.

And google is not happy about this. Currently the Apple A9 in the iPhone 6 and 6S uses the A9 chip which is fabricated using TSMC's 16nM node and Samsung's 14nM Finfet node. These are the absolute latest right now in process nodes.

The only other 14nM Finfet chip in the market is the Exynos 7420 from Samsung itself found in the Galaxy S6, Note 5 and other Samsung flagship devices.

The Apple A9 absolutely busts the Exynos 7420 in terms of performance.

Qualcomm's Snapdragon 810 and 808 don't even come close to the Exynos since they are still on older 20nM process node.

Qualcomm will launch the Snapdragon 820 soon on Samsung 14nM process with it's own custom processor cores known as Kyro which is expected to match the Exynos 7420. But Samsung is already readying their next Exynos known as the Exynos M1. And now even Samsung is going for custom cores known as Mongoose.

Qualcomm used to have custom cores in their 32 bit processors such as Snapdragon 801 found in Moto X 2nd gen and One plus X. These were known as Krait cores. The performance at that time was very good vs even Apple 32 bit processors but once Apple announced 64 bit processors, Qualcomm were left behind and only choice was to have the standard ARM A53 and A57 core.

2015 was a year to forget for non apple chip makers. It was more of a race where they were trying to out do each other in performance.

This performance race resulted in thermal issues and power issues. The phones launched this year all have good performance but at the cost of battery life.

Hopefully 2016 chip makers start looking at power as a high priority. There's no point in having a high performance device if it's dead by afternoon and you need to search for a charger or carry power banks.

You might have turbo charging now but that's still a workaround for the chip taking up too much power.

A very nice article explains why Google is not happy with this and wants to make its own processor now:

Yup, I know, I keep clearing the 8GB storage as well. Thanks for the info on dumpstate log files; didn't know about that.

No, I have not. As of now, I don't receive incoming calls only at home, it works when I go elsewhere. The signal strength at home is good and LTE works fine. Their technical team is supposed to call me, let us see what they have to say.

My nephew uses this and he is quite game crazy and happy with hardware, he rooted and loaded a different OS on day 1 though. Its a great VFM and with exchange is a good pick, i feel.

Work around available from xda needs rooting though.

I am going to wait for an official update for now, don't have any issues with space at this point of time.

Meanwhile used Outlook app for mails for the first time and am very impressed, the built in mail app of Android always had issues with my official exchange account. One it would crash, if i tried to go aggressive with usage, second the folder structure never used to come fully. With outlook app both this issue solved and i have moved all email accounts into that for now.

Flashed CM13.0 alpha build yesterday. Happy that my humble Redmi 1S is chugging along well

MIUI7 is still based on KitKat

I updated my google maps to latest version with offline maps download feature support.
but i still can't see the download button for any searched area.
I tried all the instructions from internet but no luck.
Probably they will roll out gradually this feature based on the country.

In the options available on the left pane there's offline areas option. This will take you to the screen where you can select an area to save by placing it between a defined square. It doesn't let you download maps city by city. You have to select an area to save and you'll need a lot of space for it

To download once you goto the place you searched, look at the bottom bar wih the details of the place. There you will see three vertical dots on the upper right side, select save offline map.

To access this offline later, Goto menu > Your places > scroll down to offline area

See if this works?

Edit: Here is the link https://googleblog.blogspot.in/2015/...ld-online.html the three vertical dot is not visible in the video i think, thats why people are missing it.

Yes, this is what i was trying.
Now, download button has started appearing from today morning.
Still, when i click download after searching area, it shows square area to select. This is not enough for even a complete state of India.
I would have much preferred the way it is in HERE maps where you can just select state or country and it downloads complete data.

Ah, but why would Google do that? They thrive on giving business to the ISP's, infact after the emergence of Google as the single most powerful entity of the internet (what with Youtube, Google search, Maps etc) they have driven up the revenues of ISP's and mobile internet providers sky-high. Trust me its the shrewdest company in this known universe, akin to the Skynet system which is shown in Terminator movies.

As with me, I found Androids interesting when they first came out.. simple, intuitive and no permission based software (primarily because all permissions were off as default). Today its a tremendously painful operating system to deal with, press contacts and it goes into dialling mode and not into contacts per se, every useless simple function needs an app for it to be tweaked and the permissions thing is a total sham. For someone like me who just wants to talk network-network and not 3G based, and who just sends SMS rarely (not via Whatsapp) Androids are a huge waste of time, if Nokia Symbian was human-friendly Androids are the direct opposite.

I think this has more to do with amount of details/data that google maps have. That might be the reason they would want users to download smaller areas, and i see that it is valid only for a month after which an update would be prompted. Which is good since google maps is one of the most up to date app i have come across.

Looks like, this is the reason. I tried to download this selected area size maps for Maharashtra (not even complete state was covered in this default area size). It calculated approx 1.15 GB download size
