Default FInally, in the standards

Finally, the Unicode Consortium has assigned a code point to the rupee sign.

It is at.U+20B9.

A compliant font is available at

Evertype: Rupakara a sans-serif font for India

Your operating system / keyboard driver should support the code point. That means, to enter the rupee sign, your keyboard driver would require modifications.

For reading compliant data created on some other system, all you need is the font installed.

A late-breaking addition is the newly created official symbol for the Indian rupee. "With the help of the Indian government and our colleagues in ISO, we were able to accelerate the encoding process." said Mark Davis, president of the Consortium. "Once computers and mobile phones update to the new version of Unicode, people will be able to use the rupee sign like they use $ or € now."

This months Reader's Digest has also switched to the symbol, using it in every occurring incl. the cover price!

For the advt folks, it also saves the column-centimeter space as they can replace three characters ("Rs.") with the symbol. That's substantial savings when you need to print the price of 10 or more products.
