It is very newbie friendly, you don't have to know photography. Check out our EcoSport review, it is entirely shot using the same combo, in auto mode.

Thanks a lot Samurai. It sells for 39k in Flipkart and Amazon for 28k thats why was thinking of buying it here. Also, is there any disadvantage compared to D5100 when it comes to shooting regular things. I ask this because I should be able to convince my wife on it, if Image quality is not comparable, it will be shot down.

Sorry if I am asking very basic questions, I am a complete zero in this area

If your wife is capable of discerning the difference between D5100 and NEX5R image quality and exploit that in her photographs, that will put her way ahead of most of us in photography knowledge and skill. You should be asking these questions to her.

Dpreview has the tools to compare the image quality.

LOL. I dont she is there yet as she is just starting. I was only worried because some review sites says low light picture is not as good as entry level DSLRs.

Also, does lack of Auto View Finder hinder good snaps?

If both of you are newbies, the moment you pickup any dSLR or mirrorless, you are already having a very superior equipment. The only thing that hinders good snaps is you, until you develop the skill.

So, don't go into analysis paralysis, which is the bane of amateur photographers. As of now, the only difference you will notice is that NEX5R is very small compared to D5100. If you prefer small camera over big camera, you are in the right place. If you ever grow out of NEX5R, then you would have learned enough do your own research.

You must be confusing NEX5R with the some older NEX5 cameras.
Since NEX5R is not available for 28k in amazon ,the cheapest price is 36k for a NEX5R with a 16-50mm power zoom lens.

In ebay.in its available for 36k with 2 years Sony India warranty.

The size difference between a D5100 and a NEX5R is huge.

How long will you be in US? The biggest attraction in buying from here is easy return policy. You can check and return if you find something really odd. But if you are returning soon it's of no use.

Hi Madbullram,

Costco is another store in US that has good bundle deals on cameras. If some body known to you have a store membership, you might want to have a look there as well.

On returns policy, if you really do not like it you can return to any store with all the original packing included in US.

The warehouse deals are used cameras and secondly they don't have a NEX5R with a 16-50mm lens.

Not always. You need see the description carefully. I usually buy like new items which basically will have packing damage and have been happy camper with them. We usually buy bluray etc and last time got Sony BDP5100 and others all brand new but packing had few torns etc.

The one listed for 457$ is now sold so not listed. Only 500$ ones are there. They are 18-55 lens though

Like new is still not new and especially if you want to buy it for your wife.

I wouldn't mind buying a used bluray or speakers or a amp,but what i won't buy are used phones, tablets and camera body.

But the 16-50mm version is more expensive then the 18-55mm.

Like I said, have bought loads for past 3+ years and always been new. Also, I never get the packing, usually throw it and bubble wrap and bring to India, so never had an issue with it. The used ones are generally item listed as Good or Very Good.

Thanks for that info. I didnt know that 16-50 mm is costlier But did a check with my wife, she seems to prefer the bigger Nikon D5100 then these cameras :(

See, size turned out to be the only criteria.

Show her this video may it will change her mind

Do note that in a DSLR you will get fast AF only if you view via the (OVF) viewfinder,if you use the rear lcd to compose a shot it will be awfully slow. This is where mirrorless cameras like the NEX,m4/3 shine they are really fast whether you use the lcd or the EVF (as are Sony SLT cameras which are big).
