Default Polo 1.2 or Polo 1.6

The Indian car scene in this segment is the most confusing in my opinion!
I have looked at the micra, punto, i20, i10 & polo.

After much deliberation we decided on the polo 1.2. I found this the best as per my requirement. However, the engine noise & refinement of the 1.2 was just not clicking with me.
So I decided for a TD of the 1.6 this evening and was floored!

So now I'm in a dilemma - which is the best choice to go for?
--the car is primary for my wife to ferry the kids to and from school
--will be chauffeur driven 80% of the time; rest by her
--daily run <40 km
--expect to keep the car for 3-5 years- minimum 3 yrs & positively sell before the end of 5. So should have a decent residual value.
My major concern with the 1.6 is that it's 40k expensive than the 1.2 & will give worse average. But will the resale also be worse?

Honestly for your requirements the 1.6 does not make sense over the 1.2, since you will hardly be driving it and mainly your chauffeur will be. Being the more common variant the resale will be better than the 1.6, though I can't be sure about that, since now a niche market is forming for enthusiast cars.

How was your 1.6 drive? Almost as fast as your 320i eh?

Considering your requirements, the Polo 1.2 would be a better bet.

Reasons:
- Better Fuel Efficiency.
- 80% drving by driver, so no point in a refined or powerful engine.
- In a FE conscious market, you might be able to extract a better resale out of the 1.2.

I guess this is what I'm hoping for - a decent resale for the 1.6 if I decide to get it!

Absolutely! In fact since its an MT, & smaller in size - more nippier and fun!!

--
I know that the car would be driver used most of the time, but I feel if I get the 1.2, whatever little desire I may have to drive it will be gone now that I now what the 1.6 can do!

On a serious note, even after calculating the financials, the main deterrent is the engine noise I found in the 1.2. When I opened up the hood and let the engine idle, it was shaking and sounding just like a tata diesel plant [no offense!]; whereas, in the 1.6 it was quite at par with other petrols I saw. The engine wasn't vibrating/shaking profusely, and it was not creating a racket.

Even on the Inside, the cabin was much quieter even close to the redline, which is not the case in the 1.2. she screams - rather lets out a bloodcurdling shriek.

My garage has a 320i & a Civic AT, now my wife is trusting my judgement with whatever I get, but her specs are simple - "Don't get me something you won't drive"!! which translates to a hatch at par with the rest of the garage

I guess what I'm saying is that I'm really swaying towards the 1.6, lets put it this way: leaving aside the FE, why shouldn't I get the 1.6 ?

[the FE translates to approx Rs. 600-700/month - which i can live with I guess]

forgot to mention: also checked out the Jazz & Ritz - didn't click!

I have this uncanny feeling that we'll find another thread started by Zeddo with another query post, because he would have decided to keep the 1.6 Polo, that is primarily meant for his wife.

The 1.6 is for the enthusiast in you. The 1.2 is for those who are going to be chauffeur-driven or for those school runs. So I suggest you get the 1.2. It will give you better fuel-efficiency, and is decently-refined for a 3-potter. The 1.6 is for those who like the scenery flying by while the kids are still at school!

If it is just a shout between these two, based on your requirements I would recommend the 1.2

However, as you mention that it will be chauffeur driven 80% of the time, are you sure you want to go in for the Polo? IMHO, the Polo is much better in the front seat. I found the rear a bit cramped, but this is a bit subjective and dependent on the height/ size/ age of the passengers

EDIT: just saw your recent post: didnt know about the noise in the 1.2
Go for the 1.6 and buzz me when you are going to pass it on

It's clear that you are inclined towards 1.6. And as FE doesn't worry you, go where your heart is!

So that's it then! Now that I know there's someone around to buy it in 3 year's time

Just working out the final deals with the showroom folks, will update on the decision soon! thanks for the inputs!

You already have a 320i and a Civic AT.
So unless you have a 33% reservation qouta for OBC/SC/ST go for the 1.6. . You know what I mean.

And since FE is not into consideration, why buy 1.2? The 1.6 is more refined. Has more power and torque. So what if it is chauffeur driven. It is not that you will never drive it.

This one is a no brainer, for around 40-50 grand more, you get 30 bhp more, better refinement and surprisingly, better fuel efficiency than the 1.2.

Is that true?. If so, what segment is VW aiming with the 1.2?

Suhaas, wonderfully written here. I like it.
But looks like @40 k more 1.6 polo offers much more and is a way better deal.
His wife's requirement sums it up fairly well. Get a car you like but that should be easy for me to drive around the city.
Get the 1.6

Really don't think they are aiming anything big here except for offering a chance to wannabe Maruti customers to own a VW brand.

Has VW worked on this Jetta engine? Or its ported here as is?
They should have done something. At least BSIV compliance.

Why should the FE on a 1.2 be better than the 1.6? The FE on both will depend on the driving style, logically the 1.6 should give a better FE if driven for FE & not performance, of course the 1.2 will have no performance issues
