Sorry for hijacking this thread, but dont want to start a new one with so many threads around.

We are looking at our first car, with wifey taking more drives than me. I have read all the reviews here and cornered on Xeta, would definitely let Wifey take a TD on Xeta to check if the dash is hindering for her liking.

The big question is, We would probably own the car only for the next 2 years or even less and a bit worried about the resale value of Xeta, Alto seemed to score more in this area.

TBhpians, Your suggestions phlease.

TIA.
TChau,

Lightbulb Xeta or Alto - Eye opener

I am faced with this (now) classic dialemma - Xeta or Alto?

Xeta is much better as a vehicle especially in terms of space, power and comfort.

So much is told of Alto's FE and resale value. Wanted to quantify the same.

The following are my assumptions for calculation:

- Alto's average is 17 KMPL Vs Xeta's 12.
- Average milage is 20 Km/day.
- Price of petrol is Rs.55
- Difference in resale value of Rs.50K after 5 years
- Cost of maintenance (including cost of downtime and hassles) of Alto and Xeta is same
- Price of Alto Lxi = 3.2 Lacs OTR, Bangalore, March 2008
- Price of Xeta, PS = 3.2 Lacs OTR, Bangalore, March 2008

Based on the above assumptions we can say that if we use Alto instead of Xeta, we can save a whooping 1.2 Lacs per year. (i.e.=20*365*(5/17)*55)

For 5 years if we assume the same savings with a discount rate of 10% NPV of savings will come to 5 Lacs.

NPV of savings due to difference in resale value is Rs.34 K. (i.e.=0.5/(1.1^4))

Comparing cost,

Cost of Alto = 3.2 Lacs
Cost of Xeta = 3.2 + 5 + 0.34 = 8.54 Lacs

Would you like to pay this premium to Xeta for the benefit it offers? Your call. Mine is 'negative'.

Wonderfully analysis done Buddie.Your views are true and i second it whole heartedly. But xeta is bigger and more spacious.Still if money is a concern and resale and total cost of ownership are your worries then alto lxi is the answer for your question.

Default Wrong Calculations

20*365=7300kms in a year
Fuel cost for Alto (17kmpl)= (7300/17)*55=Rs. 23617.65
Fuel cost for Xeta(12kmpl)= (7300/12)*55=Rs. 33458.33
Difference = Rs. 9840.686
Your calculation needs to be divided by 12 (FE of Xeta)
9840.686*12=Rs. 118088.2 (Thats the whooping amount you saved by opting for Alto and that was wrong)

@Ravradha, very nice analysis

EDIT: as a matter of fact even that seems to be incorrect

if everyone starts analyzing the way you did, there would be no takers for cars with better space, quality, power, brand ( not in this case). Remember that every buyer has his own set of priorities and they decide based on those priorities.

I would say a maruti 800 will save you a lot more money over a 5 year ownership period. why not go for that?

I am having a xeta im happy with it coz of the space and power it offers ...obvious that alto which has far lesser power and space will definitely give more mileage if mileage is what u are looking for then its Alto
but for pure indulgence of space and power i have choosen Xeta plus i would say it looks way better than Alto add to it its Power steering ...

You have got your math all wrong. The fuel savings for Alto would come to around 74k after 5 years.

Irrespective of the Savings- You get a bigger car in comparision and BTW Re-sale, Thats a Gonner for sure for all cars in the small segment, With a new model out every year as promised and New Nano type cars coming into foray...I suggest Don't even think of Resale unless you intend to export it to Somalia.

Cannot predict the market for 6 months, let alone 5 years- Gone are the days of Happy Resale Value, The model will now shift into Value Trade-Off by the Car Companies through Buy Back Schemes.

Its a Good VFM and miles apart from an Alto in Comfort and Power, Although the Finish and FE in an Alto is much better-But then with CNG, forget the Alto.

Exclamation Stand corrected

Yes the savings per year will be around 10K. So NPV for 5 years saving will be 42 K + 34 K = 76 K.

Hmmm. More power, space and comfort @ 76K. Xeta is not bad.

I will put up a realistic calculation here.
Alto mileage-17 kmpl,xeta mileage-12 kmpl
Avg running per day-40 kms
Price of petrol-50 rs pl
So you need 4235 lts of petrol for 5 yrs in an alto and 6000 ltrs of petrol in a xeta.
The difference is 1765 ltrs of petrol ,when multiplied by 50 rs-88,250 rs.
You save that amount for an alto over xeta for 5 yrs.Difference in resale can be 25k for a 5 yr old xeta and alto.total savings is 113250 rs.

You decide whether you have to spend that amount for the additional space in xeta.

If you're running that much , the DLS makes more sense,

Hmm, lets see. Indica DLS Mileage 16 kmpl
Avg running /day 40 kms
price of diesel - 34 rs pl

5 years. You'll need 4562 ltrs of diesel vs 4235 ltrs of petrol for the alto
@ 34 rs / ltr diesel, = 155108 . @ 50 / ltr for alto = 211750

comes to 57k savings. the indica DLS costs 70k more than an alto LXi, but gets back 20k on resale. so it comes to net 7k savings over the alto. so you save money and get space

Of course , you can argue about higher diesel maintainence costs , and i can , in return talk about inflation of petrol prices being more.

I dont want to pick a fight. I just went a bit extra to highlight a flaw in ram's arguement- ie the 40km/day running. At that range you're getting into diesel territory.

most buyers at that price point will not be running that much kilometers. so the effect will be proportionally lesser.

I just came back from a trip with my friends . we went in an alto and my indica. My car could lug all 5 of us with ease through most inclines, everyone wanted to sit in my car , and the trip cost me less than my friend with the alto

Guys, can we compare horses with horses? Alto is a 800 CC car; Xeta is 1200 CC car.

It is simply pointless to make the comparision.

Of course, if economy and resale value is the consideration, do go ahead with Alto.

The direction of the comparison being made here reminds of the guy on mouthshut who got an M800 instead of BMW coz. both have MPFI engine.

well when you say xeta is it 1.2 or .14L? how come do you assume the mileage of the alto to be 17kmpl as claimed by maruti in the ad? man its only 14+kmpl in the city!

coming to the xeta 1.2L gives 14+kmpl in the city, unlike the 1.4L gives 10 or 11+kmpl so i say the basic assumption is way wrong! all the FE figures are with ac on all the time.
