Default My First car..

Hello everyone,

I have been a bhp'er since early last month and have been closely
following the informative posts on various cars. I am in a bit of a dilemma.

I intend to buy my first car immediately after the monsoons and
certainly before the end of this year (So i assume now is a good time to discuss this !). I understand that one can get the best pricing and discounts/ goodies towards the end for reasons of sales-push and year-change.

My budget is stretched at about 6 lakhs on road (Mumbai). This largely will be financed, with a down payment of 1-1.5 L by me.

I travel approx. 40 kms a day, 6 days a week (50 - 50 Highway & city).

I intend to buy a sedan with:
a) Good FE (11-13 kmpl in city and 15-17kmpl on highway)
b) Decent A.S.S
c) Low/ reasonable costs on maintenance and spares
d) Robust and well-built.
e) Sure handling and stability at high speeds.
f) Good road clearance
g) Comfortable front & rear seating for 5 adults.
h) Decent resale potential (In about 2 years)

On my immediate shortlist are:
a) Ikon Flair 2007
b) Accent GLE
c) Aveo 1.4

The other confusing aspect is the presence of solid hatchbacks - Swift,
UV-A and Palio Stile 1.1 / 1.6, which makes me want to consider that
segment too !!

Also, given my daily usage does it make sense to go in for a diesel car,
instead of petrol?

Cheers!
Jaison

Why diesel:
http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/indian...uy-diesel.html (Why did you buy a diesel?)

Swift Diesel meets all ur requirements except:
1. No boot.
2. Rear seat is so so (you said 5 adults)

with 40km a day 6 days a week you can surely ty out a diesel option. And at your budget the Swift VDi would be the best option according to me. The negatives though are

1.No height adj steering.
2.Low seating position.
3.All Black interiors.
4.No rear wipers/defogger
5.Low boot space
6.Low interior space
7.Bench Rear Seats
....and the list could go on.

But at that price its the best diesel you could get.

I dont think you can get an aveo or at below 6 L!!!!!!!!

The Ikon is a real value for money car right now. if you could bear with the old generatin looks all around.

If you are lucky enough the Getz CRDI would be out and that would be perfect if they price it well ewnough.

Stretched budget? Which means lower the better, and its on road, right

1000kms a month. with average FE of 12 for petrol and 15 for diesel you are looking at 4000 a month for petrol or a 2300 a month for diesel.
If you factor in service costs etc., you will spend 1000rs more every 6 months on the diesel(worst case). So petrol comes to about 1500 a month more. How important is that to you?

Do you really need a sedan? If no then in hatchbacks the Getz/Palio/Indica/UVA satisfy your 5 persons requirement.
Accent cannot seat 3 in rear unless they are tiny people. In sedan land you have Indigo/Flair/Aveo 1.4 to chose from. I wonder if Aveo 1.4 comes within 6L on road mumbai?

Most ( if not all) requirements of yours can be matched by ESTEEM VXI. Car still is a good value buy IMO. Yes its dated but still a very good entry level sedan for the price it qoutes.

Jaison, you had asked me earlier for my opinion.
Let me know if you require any further details. And good luck.

At 6 Lakhs, i dont think you could aim for the proper C segmenters, including the Aveo.

As TSK asks - Do you really need a sedan ? Look at solid hatches - You have the Swift , the Palio , the Getz, the UVA .And umm - can I fit in the Fusion here too (can you get it for 6L is the question)?

Swift should be the most common choice.

Palio 1.6 will thrill you the most and the Palio 1.1 will irritate you the most if you love to drive. FIAT A.S.S in collaboration with TATA , me not too sure.

Getz will offer more comfort at the back than the Swift and A.S.S comparable to the Swift.

UVA is a nice car too - nice interiors. But GM offers great A.S.S packages too. And add to it its not a common car.

Fusion - Its the car I would have bought if I was in your shoes. But than again thats me.

Take a TD of all cars and decide what suits you.

Avoid the Ikon and Accent. Consider Aveo if you really want a sedan.

@Jaison: i think its easy for you to make choice here. since you are looking for features like "good ground clearence", "Robust and well-built.
e) Sure handling and stability at high speeds"

I think "Palio Adventure" suits this well, its great at high speeds, you can ruff it out, great ground clearence" resale is something which can bring it down but i feel this car should hav a great resale value as you hardly find used adventures. i was looking for one here in bangalore and failed to find any.
In diesel i think you can close your eyes and go for "Swift Diesel".

Looks like yor immediate short list will not suit all your requirements. Accent and Flair will not give more than 11 kms mileage in the city. Aveo will not fit into the budget. I feel Esteem VXi will be the right option given all your requirements. However it is not a new look car, if you are okay to live with that...

Considering that this is your first car, I would suggest a newer car and not one that's reached its end-of-life. Hence Esteem, Accent, Ikon ruled out. Within a budget of 6.00L what fits is B+ segment car - Palio, Getz, Swift et al. These would leave you with spare cash for ICE, Alloys etc. Having been a Hyundai customer for 5 yrs and experienced their A.S.S, I would lean to the Getz. Not only Getz meets most of the attributes you have listed, its also spacious than the Ikon & Esteem.

May i suggest the new Indigo XL for 5.25L ex showroom -- will comfortably seat 5 adults and has loads of space on offer and should fit into the price point u are looking at.

Somewhere else a Palio Adventure has been mentioned -- i would add that and the Indigo Marina to my list of suggested options

Logan makes lot of sense, according to auto mags Logan D will give good FE as well. I am sure that will suit your requirment. TD and see if you like it other wise Swift Diesel for the kind of FE you are expecting Deisel is the option.

Ravi.
