Default Hatchback Comparator

I'm planning on buying a second car (Already have a SWIFT VXI, 2005). Just made a small hatch back comparator in Excel and need your invaluable inputs to help decide... other suggestions are also welcome.
My purchase window is before Mar31, 2009.

I think that A Star ZXi is the car you should go in for.
Seems a good vfm package overall.

Very good table!
I can clearly see now how my 2nd hand car will really benefit me in the long run due to low initial cost.
Another point is that even a small increase in FE really adds up fast in the final total.

Well I doubt Astar giving mileage of 16 in City. I dont think it'll ever give anything above 13 like alto

Thanks for the table. I am planning to buy something in this segment in Bangalore next month. Very helpful indeed !

One quick thing though. The equation changes if you include the sale price within the TCO. Then the diesels start making more sense.

Hi dude,

Thats a great spreadsheet that you have shared... Just curious on the choice of vehicles... is it that these are the newest among the hatches?? Since a lot of people may look for lower price points as well, we can also add the older popular hatches which are still going strong like Alto, Santro, Spark, Palio... what say... but your inputs are a great job indeed for any one who is planning for a hatch... cheers

You haven't stated the purpose the car will be used for.

If it is only and only for City, A* is a good bet. Otherwise, depending on your requirements, there can be a lot of variations in the selection criteria.

Eg: The Kms that you have stated i.e. 70k, if they are annual, then diesel makes a lot of sense. Etc etc.

Please list the purpose.

Oh its very easy to misinterpret with such excel sheets. TOTALLY.

Kindly add in:
a. Move ALL cars to a common kit level (the VXi for example). The cost of the safety in ZXi should not be in comparison. First you decide between cars on running cost, then take a personal call on kit level. Current state is not helpful.
b. Driving pleasure? Space? Handling?
c. Resale values would make things look lovelierin favor of the Swift D like we all know

You missed out GM Spark and UVA. Both are excellent cars, which most of us fail to realize. At least you do a test drive before you make the final decision.

TCO apart, I would rather focus on my requirements first than jumping at the cost. A-Star does look cheaper over all. But what if more than 2 people even for 30% of the times. What if there is a requirement for a bigger boot?

I would first look at the requirements, and then try to fit them into the options available for my budget, and not the other way round.

Instead of poking holes in someone else's good effort, why don't we all download, "improve" and then link our own versions of the sheet? I think it would help a lot of people.

PS. I added the details of my Sparky in and found it is the cheapest
