Default Booked car, now moving town. Help?!

A close friend of mine who is a native of Mangalore,Karnataka has been living in Chennai (rental house) and working there for almost 4 years now. He booked a Ford Figo at Chennai dealership last month.

The car is due for delivery this Monday (5 Sep). Problem is, he was just now informed that his office is shifting permanently to Bangalore this month.

Now he is in a dilemma whether to get the new car registered at Chennai or at Bangalore. Since he will end up living either in Bangalore or Mangalore in the long run, I suggested he register the car in Bangalore itself.

But the problem is he does not have any address proof in Bangalore. His passport mentions his Mangalore permanent address.

Requesting TBHPians' advise on which is the better option: Register in Chennai, shift to Bangalore or get it registered in Bangalore? Also, can the booking be shifted to a Bangalore dealership?

Much Thanks!

Please inform your friend he will be ripped off by the RTO, once again he will end up paying lifetime tax amounting to almost 90% of the value of the tax he has paid in TN. It is better he asks for delivery of the car in Bangalore or Mangalore. If he has residential proof in Mangalore than let him register in Mangalore and use the car in Bangalore, if RTO insists he can apply for change of address, it is as simple as that. I had a horror of time with RTO officials claiming almost 25 k for a 10 year old car for migration of car from Mumbai. Additionally your friend may have to apply for NOC etc if he registers in Chennai

Talk to the dealer, show proof of the move. He will emphathize and take a small fee, and resell the car. A lot less compared to the re-reg hassles

Since the car is not delivered a lot of things can be done, might take some time & effort but is worth it, since the office is permanently shifting.

- Ask the dealer to get the delivery done at Mangalore dealer.
- Cancel your current booking and make a new one in Mangalore
- Get all the initial documents and get it registered in Mangalore through an Agent. You will have to pay additional KA entry tax since you are buying in TN and registering in KA.

Under any circumstances do not get the TN registration done. Its a big headache afterwards and loss of the TN Road Tax + you will anyway have to pay KA road tax (double whammy).

Thank you folks. Spoke to the friend and he will be visiting the showroom tomorrow to talk to them and cancel the booking. He also informed that he has paid the full amount upfront while booking.

Not sure of Ford dealers but my friend had a good experience with Toyota, he moved and told them the problem. They moved his booking and delivered his car to the new location. I think he was charged some money for this but much less hassle.

Best thing for him would be to get his car registered in Namma Kudla. Thereon with KA plates he must not face any issues with the RTO in Blor. Doesn't make any sense to pay tax ( and do paperwork) twice over within a few days. Could he get his car delivery changed to MLor ? Pls let us know.

Folks, he spoke to the dealer. The salesguy first advised him to get it registered in TN as it wont be much of a hassle paying road tax later etc. Then friend spoke to the manager who made few calls and has agreed to cancel the booking. Overall, the discussion was smooth and cancellation will be done on Monday. Will give a final update once he cancels (on the amount and any other notable interactions). Thanks guys. Much obliged.

Update:

The car booking has been cancelled and the dealer (MPL Ford, Thiruvanmiyur) refunded the entire amount. No cancellation fee or any other charges. Hassle free process. And the car loan (from SBI) has been closed too. Only loss was the loan processing fee. Thanks again for the advise.

Great to know that everything went off smoothly without any major loss and least hassles. What documents were given to the dealer to cancel the booking? I guess the car was in the process of delivery which means the registration had happened, how was this cancelled? What happened to the RC? Can you please provide any more details if you have.

The car was scheduled to get registered on Monday but friend informed them few days earlier, so no RC book hassles. No documents were required to cancel the booking. He explained the situation, the manager spoke to his superior and agreed to cancel & refund entire amount.
