Mumbai: Dealer charging Rs 500 extra for smart card RC Book

Just now I called my car dealer to ask whether my RC book has come. he said ya it has come and i have to pay 500rs extra for the smart card. Does any body have an idea about the smart card RC Book. Is he charging extra???

Recently, when I changed my car, i got the Smart card RC for 500/- extra,It was in mumbai a couple of months back.

AFAICT, RTOs will charge you extra if the RC is going to be in a laminated card format, and even more if it is in a smart card format.

Bought my car last month and RC is a smart card.

As per dealer RTO only gives RC in form of card now a days (not sure if that is right). Did not have to pay anything for card. There are two RTO receipts, one for tax and another for 350 Rs that includes number charges, Hypothication entry etc.

As per TOI article:

I got a smart card for my getz,but i wasn't charged for anything,nor did the dealer said anything over the phone,I just receiveda letter stating my Getz RCA Smart card have come to the showroom and i need to collect it.so went and picked it up.

EDIT:mine is also a MH-02

Isn't the smart card cost included in the RTO Registeration?????IT should be......Then why to pay extra money????

@swapnil - depends. Since smart cards are not issued from all RTOs, the government splits the fees into two components - one for registration itself, and an additional fee for those offices where smart cards are issued.

It looks like from this post that dealers, (as usual) charge a further premium on smart card fees too.

@mithun - one has to start somewhere, no? It is not possible to make every office IT savy overnight.

I don't know what a smart card is, butI paid Rs 400 for registering my new car, and I got the RC book in a card form.

I'll gladly pay even Rs.2000 if I can get DL/RC in card format, let alone smart car. The Udupi RTO still doles out DL and RC in book format. Wait, they are out of stock on book too, I got the GV registration as a sheet of paper.

Meanwhile I am still hanging on to my Bangalore DL (card) since I don't want to carry DL book.

PS: Gosh, when will technology trickle down to rural areas.

370 bucks is what they took in Delhi (Virgo Softech) for the bike's RC in 06. That is something which the dealer should've already billed you for, under regn charges. Kindly recheck. Time for a verbal whack on da head IMNSHO.
