98.50 lakhs is daylight robbery for what is essentially a 10 year old roadster and that too with an IDI V6 engine. An R8 for just a few more lakhs is a much better car. And the GL 500 has a 5461 cc V8 engine, not a V6.

Apart from the exorbitant price, the new SL is not as good looking as the previous model. The real robbery will start after the sale, in terms of spares and service.

It is a totally different car from the R8 - a pure tourer. Frankly, it is going out of production by sept (assuming Frankfurt or Geneva 2012) announces the next SL so why did they bother?

This is the biggest problem with Mercedes-Benz India, they keep relaunching products just to be in the lime light, the SL 350 has been available since pretty much the launch in 2002 so why do they keep doing press events for no reasons?

Have we ever seen BMW launching a car again and again for no reason? I mean you could at any point order the SL 350 from the dealerships and the GL 500 is pretty much again a pointless exercise but just done because it costs them very little to launch CBU's like this.

To clear off the stocks. What else? Same thing happened with VW. Why else would they launch the old Touareg and Phaeton when the new versions were just around the corner?

SL350 is one good car ruined by an useless engine. Sometime back, they sold the pre-facelift SL500 at Rs 90 lakhs. Ratan tata got one too, maybe in 2003 I suppose? I dont see anybody buying this piece of junk. The Z4 is amazing for some 35 lakhs less and produces 300 odd bhp.

Mercedes has barely manage to sell 2000+ SL 350's in 2010 in spite of having a 6L V12 engine churning out 612 horses and here they come to India with a 3.5 litre V6 engine.

India is no more a dumping ground for outdated models and to clear your inventories, for heavens sake change your mentality.

Grow up Mercedes.

98L for the SL350? Mercedes is surely milking its Indian customers these days! Sad really!

The SL350 always had a 3.5L V6. The one you're talking about is the SL600.

IMO, the SL would be absolutely pointless for two reasons. The Z4 offers just as much practicality and power, at a much lesser price. It also looks better, IMO. Secondly, a new one is scheduled to be launched at the Geneva Motor Show, IIRC. Don't know what Mercedes were thinking.

Z4 is in the class of SLK, not SL. Comparing 6 series and SL would make sense. But again, 6 series is not a hard top convertible! Hard top convertibles always fetch a premium.

+1 for the second point.

Yes, size-wise, the SL is a competitor of the 6-series. But on every other feature, the Z4 is a worthy competitor too. Personally, I'd have a Z4 any day. But then, that's probably just me.

The wind definitely isn't blowing Mercs way and I feel this launch proves it once again. Audi and Bmer have been bringing in better cars off lately and this looks like Merc is struggling to play catch up!!
