Very interesting.
Good to know that the Bangalore Traffic system too is technologically up to date leveraging social networking sites like FB and Twitter.

Nice job Nitin.

BTW have you identified few ripe conditions for an almost certain traffic jam? ... from the experience?

Probably we can come up with something to eliminate these conditions.

Nitin, you are doing a good job. Hope it brings down some temperature on our roads.

I had a question, do they use the visual data to analyze potential traffic blunders and take some actions or give inputs to respective departments?

Certain blunders like

1) Bus terminals immediately after traffic signals, fly over exits.
2) No medians bifurcating traffic moving straight and those waiting for the right signal to turn green. This happens @ most of the signals when the straight signal is green and the right signal turns green after a while or turns red much before the straight one. Vehicles awaiting the right turn occupy most of the road thus blocking vehicles heading straight.

Great info Nithin

I had a chance to meet the top traffic cop some time back in Chennai. He said, "Karnataka Govt has invested 250 crores for traffic. In Chennai it is not the case. So we have lot of shortages in all aspects from resources to technology". I submitted few suggestions to them.

I am not a regular visitor to Bangalore. I found these things better there than in chennai. For cameras to function properly, the roads/cameras need to be cleaned regularly otherwise the footages may not be clear. Bangalore is cleaner and the encroachments are less.

Even sify.com updates the traffic status. To effectively utilise these "traffic status", car drivers need to make a habit of listening to traffic updates regularly.

With the number of vehicles on the roads growing in geometric progression, it is very neccessary that all the metros and major cities invest in Traffic Management Centers. Too bad Chennai has not had the foresight to invest in something so important. Could Team -Bhpians from other states let us know how their cities states are faring where
TMCs are concerned.
Also , do any of the other Metros/States have a Traffic Reporter system?
Regards,
Ashok

andar ki baat: we are having talks with the top cops in Chennai, and if things go fine, chennai will also have traffic reporters on air.

That was really good read. I am sure managing traffic in Bangalore is one of the most stressful jobs for the cops.

I understand this is done for keeping it short and precise. Is there any place where the entire list can be published? Some text file on the Bangalore city website. We can refresh our phones and get a more comprehensive update.
The reason why I am saying it is that you already have this information

yes there is... we keep updating our updates regularly on the FB you can join us and get information on a regular basis. Please feel free to find us on face book at: facebook.com/bangaloretraffic

We also encourage people to inform us about the traffic congestions if any, this would help us and in most cases I cross check the reason for the congestion and the time when it will get cleared (approx) from the cops.
