The Pune Rural police have found a large stock of stolen goods, valued at Rs5 lakh, belonging to auto major, Volkswagen India. It was recovered from a scrap dealer on Pune-Alandi Road on the night of June 26.
A night patrol chanced upon the scrap dealer, Jaffar Hasan Mohammad Khan (27), hastily closing his shop around midnight. Upon inquiry and a search of Khan’s shop, the police patrol recovered 341 items belonging to the Volkswagen wiring assembly inside 15 boxes.
Police said that the company was also not aware of the incident until they were informed about it. A first information report was filed on June 27 at the Chakan police station by Sanmit Shinde, the company’s logistics officer.
Five suspects, identified as scrap dealer Jaffar Hasan Mohammad Khan (27) of Dighi, truck driver Ganesh Thombare (25), Transport Corporation of India (TCI) supervisor Dharmendra Singh (29) of Gopalpur, Santosh Nagarikar (32) and Pravin Chaudhari (29) of Seva Logistic Service, were arrested.

These are not stolen parts but the auctioned parts from customs because of some paperwork problems.

Good job Pune Police!

@SR71: Dont you think its a bit harsh to make a statement like that? In a plant that huge, 15 missing boxes would be difficult to track.

@Nicky: Any information, that made you reach this conclusion?
The article states that even VW wasnt aware of the stolen goods, and an FIR has been lodged. If they were auctioned goods, the FIR and arrests make no sense.

I agree with Swanand Inamdar; I remember the news some years back when whole finished truck was stolen from Telco/TATA motors factory and I was not sure whether to laugh or wonder how

Two different things here - customer care and workshop security. I dont think customer care is linked with this news.

It is very possible that these parts were smuggled out bit by bit or in one shot in collusion with the security in place. IMHO, if its the latter it can be risky for VW owners giving their cars there for servicing.
More reason why we should ensure a 'PDI' check is done when collecting the car after servicing.

@Selfdrive: The possibilities seem endless.
It may be the case, that these boxes were components, that were supposed to be delivered to the factory from the vendor premises, and the theft happened en-route. There are innumerable incidents like that happening on a daily basis.

However, if they were indeed stolen from the factory premises with security in place, then it sure is a concern.

More likely as some people from the transport company too have been arrested. Also the complaint has been lodged by the logistics offier of VW. If it had been a workshop, it would have to be either a security person or an employee who would be an accomplice, and the complaint would be lodged by the Works Manager IMO.
